ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Man of the Match, Julian Sinclair’s 5 wicket haul, including a hat trick, followed by an unbeaten 60 from Keith Semple, gave the Cavaliers a relatively straight forward 7 wicket victory against the Vikings in the Final of the Scotiabank 20/20 on Sunday July15, 2012.

Vikings Skipper Vaden Walker won the toss after a slightly delayed start following a rain shower, but that was about the only thing that went right for his team as they struggled to a below par 123 all out from their 20 overs.

The plan of changing the batting order to protect the duo of Govin Singh and Richard Fredericks back fired as the pair found themselves together at the crease with the score on 4 for 2. Kevin Walker, promoted to opener, fell in the first over caught and bowled by Vijay Jhappan without scoring and Ryan Mangal fell soon after caught Roshan Hushman bowled Jagnarine Persaud for 2 trying to hit out after the stalwarts of the Cavaliers bowling applied early pressure with tight lines and consistent length.

As Singh and Fredericks began to rebuild the innings, further pressure was applied by good field placing from “Teddy” Nankishore and both Vishal Bharat and Keith Semple restricting the run scoring shots. Singh was the next to fall for a battling 25, with the score on 59 top edging a short ball from Bharat straight to Nankishore at mid wicket.

Fredericks was next to succumb after hitting Julian Sinclair for consecutive fours at the start of his spell. The third was miscued by Fredericks to mid off and the catch was taken and then Sinclair struck twice more to complete his first ever hat trick.

“After the first two balls went for four I just concentrated on the next ball. It takes just one good ball and that’s what started it all. When I got the third one it was an amazing feeling,” commented Sinclair.

The Vikings were now in tatters at 69 for 6 and only some resolute hitting by Mahabir who scored 23 and a late cameo by Vaden Walker with 12 lifted the total to any where near a defendable score.

Sinclair mopped up the last couple of wickets aided by a run out to finish with his first ever 5 wicket haul conceding 49 runs.

Semple and Nankishore got the Cavaliers reply off to a steady if not spectacular start putting on 36 for the first wicket before Walker clean bowled his opposite captain for 13 with a ball that snuck back in off a length to crash into the middle stump.

Playing in his last game before heading off to live in Canada, Semple took a while to get into his stride and survived a huge shout for a catch behind before asserting his quality on proceedings and guiding the Cavaliers home with an unbeaten 60 containing 8 fours. Dorian Auguiste supplied some big hits on his way to 29, but yet again it was to be the Cavaliers day as they strolled to the victory target with almost 3 overs to spare.

“I wanted to bat first,” said Nankishore. “However, we knew that with our strong bowling attack we could restrict them and then chase whatever total we faced. Losing Semple will be a big loss for us going forward, but the Cavaliers are not easy to knock down and we wish him all the best.”

During the Award presentation, President of the H. Lavitty Stoutt Community College Dr. Karl Dawson remarked on a great game between the two sides and re-confirmed his and the College’s commitment to Cricket development whilst Andy Davis, on behalf of the Sponsors, Scotiabank also stated it had been a great day of cricket. “Commiserations to the Vikings, but I’m sure they will be back hard next time. It was a good tournament and on behalf of Scotiabank I would like to thank all the supporters for coming out,” he said. “Scotiabank is committed to its support of cricket, both regionally and locally.”

Daniel Singh making remarks on behalf of the President of the BVICA commented, “We had 8 teams and a lot of cricket throughput the tournament,” he said. “Shan Mohammed, the President, couldn’t be here today, but I would also like to thank Irving Hendrickson and his ground staff for all their hard work as well as Scotiabank for their valued support.”

Thanks indeed to Scotiabank for the sponsorship. Well done indeed. Looking forward to having you back next year to keep cricket alive and well.
