WICKKHAM’S CAY, Tortola, VI- As part of ongoing national training and disaster preparedness efforts by the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) in conjunction with the Office of the Governor, a Maritime Emergency Exercise took place at Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park this morning, June 5, 2025.

Many people and at least one news media outlet mistook it for a real emergency. 284 Media reported on the incident as 'Breaking News'.

The purpose of the exercise was to simulate a real-life emergency at sea and assess emergency response protocols, particularly in areas involving search, rescue, and recovery efforts.

The Cyril B Romney Tortola Pier Park was chosen as the location for the exercise, give its proximity to cruise vessels and maritime operations.

According to reports, tenants were notified that a drill would take place but “had not received a detailed briefing nor a confirmed time for the exercise”.

Tenants were also informed that active involvement “may be required depending on how the scenario unfolds.”
