Silver for Huggins @ Jamaica Champs
Huggins ran 11.85 seconds in her heat to progress to the semi-final where she ran 11.75 to qualify as the third fastest finisher ahead of the final.
In the final, Patrice Moody of Edwin Allen, ran a personal best 11.49 to beat Huggins, representing St Jago, 11.67 and Shanice Reid, also of St Jago, 11.68.
Nigel Ellis (STETHS) and Kimone Shaw (St Jago) are currently the fastest Jamaican high school athletes based on their exploits at Champs on Friday (March 18).
Shaw, however, was in record-breaking mood. In the Class 2 girls’ final, she dismissed a very strong field to run 11.40 seconds and erased former Vere Technical’s Jura Levy's 8-year-old mark of 11.46.
“I didn’t expect a record run but I have been training for the record,” she said while adding “It was a difficult race knowing that Shellece Clarke (Edwin Allen) and Shaneil English (St Jago) was in it.” But, according to her “I came out here with my A game and I thank God for it.”
Khamoy Farquharson of Edwin Allen was second in 11.65 seconds and English third in 11.68.
Ellis, in one of the most highly anticipated Class 1 boys’ 100m final in recent memory, ran a personal best, 10.18 seconds, to beat St. Jago’s Raheem Chambers, who also recorded a career 10.25 and Kingston College’s (KC) Jhevaughn Matherson, 10.35.
The STETHS sprinter, who got a very good start, but said he stumbled a little midway, which eliminated his chances of taking down the 10.12 record, set two years ago by Zharnel Hughes of KC, was still happy.
“I am happy to get the gold medal,” he said while promising to remove Usain Bolt’s record of 20.25 in the 200m final on Saturday.
Calabar finished first and second in the Boys’ Class Two 100 metres with Michael Stephens winning in 10.48 seconds and Dejour Russell getting second in 10.54.
Sachin Dennis of STETHS was impressive in the Class 3 boys’ final, crossing the line in 10.90, ahead of Thia Shea of Wolmer’s Boys, 11.09 and Shemar Williams of Papine, 11.13.
Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis, who was second in Class 4 last year, returned to take her first Class 3 title in 11.63. She dismissed St. Lucian national Julien Alfred, the favourite representing St. Catherine High, 11.77secs. Shanique Rowe of Edwin Allen got third in 12.04.
Sashieka Steel of Holmwood stole the show in Class 4 by taking the top spot in 11.91 ahead of Gabrielle Matthews of Hydel, 12.01 and Bethany Bridge of Edwin Allen, 12.31.

I commend Nelda for going back to school and advancing her studies and career.
Nelda continue to shine and make the BVI proud. There will always be the ones with negativity but just know that not even Jesus was perfect!
