ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Von Alphonso, the Acting Director of the Water and Sewage Department, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing improvements at the Diamond Estate Pump Station as the government aims to enhance existing water infrastructure.

On Monday, January 5, 2026, the Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), along with Acting Director Alphonso, conducted a site visit at the Diamond Estate Pump Station and provided a brief update on the recently completed works.

Low-pressure switches

Alphonso noted that lower-pressure switches have been installed to activate the pumps and protect them from high water pressure. These upgrades allow the station to operate independently and efficiently.

He explained, "The booster pump up the hill, up there, we had to install a low-pressure switch that activates the pump, and it also protects the pump from water. So, we install a low-pressure switch at that pump station, at the higher one, and down at the platforms, they reinstall a new control panel."

The Acting Director mentioned that a system was implemented to enable automatic operation of the station, stating, "So that the station can operate independently and automatically, so the operator doesn't have to be present as much. So, with this being able to run automatically, the tank will be able to fill a lot quicker and more efficiently."

He added that an additional 10-hour power pump and a low-pressure switch were installed, along with a new pump, control panel, and another pressure switch for pump protection.

Previously, when water levels dropped, operators had to rush to shut off the system manually. "Now there’s a control switch; the panel wasn’t working as it should. Now we have it installed and set up. Once the water pressure drops, it shuts down automatically. We did some reprogramming at the station, and we settled some adjustments to get this one here, going as well."

Modernised water system

These upgrades at the Diamond Estate Pump Station are part of a government initiative aimed at modernising the water system as a critical component of a territory-wide, 12-month action plan.

The government has identified water as a "national critical priority," which facilitates streamlined procurement processes to efficiently address the deteriorating water infrastructure. The upgrades are part of a comprehensive strategy that includes system management, reservoir security, and public engagement.

Must be at the correct protective depth and fall if necessary gravel below pipe then sand covering the pipe then gravel then a marker tape to identify the service water/ sewage/ power/info ,then refilling with a suitable hardcore and a record of it’s specific route location proper access manholes. Not scape a shallow trench bung it in throw back what came out and hope someone remembers where it is ,what it is and at what depth , when it assuredly needs digging back up because it is damaged because it was never laid correctly!

We need to see a maintenance plan reflecting the long-term aims of the department
