ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Unconfirmed reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online is that the Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, Marieta Flax- Headley, has allegedly been sanctioned for criticizing the decision by Education Minister Myron Walwyn to have a slogan removed from the school’s building.

Virgin Islands News Online was told that Hon. Walwyn had instructed that the newly erected signage, with words ‘The Mighty Mighty’, be removed from the school building exterior and replaced with ‘Althea’ and that he reportedly directed the school principal that the removal be completed before school re-opened on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. The slogan has since been removed from the building.

Ms. Flax-Headley had labelled the decision by the Minister as insulting since the directive was allegedly issued without any prior dialogue with the school's administration.

She had also said the school was given permission by former Minister for Education Hon. Andrew Fahie to use the slogan on the building at its own expense and it was done to boost morale among students and staff.

According to our sources within the Education Ministry, Ms. Flax-Headley was allegedly summoned by the Minister following an article on this news site in which she had expressed her disappointment with the way the matter was handled.

She had indicated to Virgin Islands News Online that she received an email Sunday night January 1, 2012, from Acting Chief Education Officer Jillian Douglas-Phillip instructing that the sign be removed. The Principal further noted that no one ever called to say why nor did the email include a reason for the decision.

“The school has a principal, and two assistant principals, not one of us were called. The sign is there for a reason and we got permission to put it there. I feel that the department should have had the courtesy to dialogue with us if there was a problem with the slogan,” she had said.

It is not clear what came out of the meeting involving Minister Walwyn and the Principal as when contacted Ms. Flax-Headley declined to comment.

The Minister could not be reached for a comment either.

Minister Walwyn had previously issued a statement on the matter in which he said it is a long standing policy for the Government of the Virgin Islands to name schools in honour of outstanding educators and that the Althea Scatliffe Primary School is one such institution. “The recent painting of what appeared to be a slogan on the school, though ingenious and fosters school spirit, is not in keeping with the expressed desire to honour those who served and the promoting of their legacy of service. The said signage has thus been removed from the school building after the principal was informed accordingly,” the statement read.

“It is noteworthy to inform the public that such a sign on the exterior of a public building should be approved by Government or may be placed on the interior of the building on a bulletin board or as a poster,” the statement concluded.

I am getting tired of this story and this principal. Do as you are told, the same as your kids are supposed to do when you give them an instruction. I sure will not be sending my child to any school that this lady is in charge of.

I pitty your child if this is the level of rational thinking that you are capable of. The issue is not the actual removal of the slogan. Myron's reasoning is acceptable to me. However, the core issue is the manner in which it was done. If the principal's account of the events is true, Myron was wrong to perform such an act without prior dialogue with the school leadership.

Tired: You sound so stupid, there is no one holding a gun to your head forcing you to send your child to any school Ms. Headley is in charge of, because there are plenty schools in the BVI you can send your child to, so what's your point.

I second this!! Rules is rules!!! Minister Fahie gave the okay when his GOVERNMENT WAS IN CHARGE!! If the now Education Minister finds that the slogan needs to be removed why question his authority?? Even though after all he still said why it has to be removed anyway.... I sure bet Mrs Headley staff cant question her authority so why did she even comment on this matter? This is the problem with BVIslanders in the work force we don't like to do as we're told once we're in a high position but we need to always remember we always have someone else over us to answer to that we cant question their judgment!! Yes that's their slogan but there are other ways to do it...For instance put in on their house t shirts or their p.e shirts. From what i see they really trying to turn this place into the US system but news flash look at what little St Thomas going through!! Thousands of government workers are being sent home because the government has no money among other things.... But anyway to say this to say she had no right cause she must remember she may be the principle of the school but she's not the education MINISTER was has the higher authority and power so she need to just abide by the rules as I'm sure she tells her students she needs to take her own advice and shut it!!

It has nothing to do with being personal but all to do with being professional! This is not a professional approach by a principal to her superiours and sends a very bad message to the kids.

Yes, she had a right to speak up! You people are so naive and swallow every thing thrown at you! She's from here, she's in charge of the school and doing a MIGHTY good job. The way the ministry handled the situation was wrong and indeed insulting. This move seems very vindictive and a plot to show power and seek attention, but let him continue! Good going Myron!

I TOTALLY disagree with your comment tired “I sure will not be sending my child to any school that this lady is in charge of.” Headley is a strong principal and under the VIP administration got things done for the schools she was attached to. Now my child goes to ASPS and is thriving in the environment. I, myself am tired of this story. The Minister of Education & Culture did not deal with the situation CORRECTLY from start. He had to have known before Sunday that the sign was in controversy with the “laws” so to speak, as I am certain he did not have an epiphany pertaining to it that said day........ Having said that, The Principal of the school was wrong and out of place to respond publicly to any news site regarding her thoughts and feelings of The Minister being insulting or displaying insulting behaviour!!! She should be DEFINITELY be “taken to task” for displaying that type of behaviour. The Minister is a grownup, and for some reason the people of the BVI indicated that they have confidence in him by electing him as a representative for the country. Myron, act like a grown man. DO THINGS THE PROPER WAY. I for one, am not interested in any PETTY issues you may have. Headley, you are a grownup charged with being the principal and a ROLE MODEL for my child. Act like a grownup, know your place, and respect yourself so that the kids at your school will respect you. Now I am going to tell you and Myron something, “You all had better NOT interfere with my child’s education in a negative manner because I will raise hell in Tortola, England and wherever else I need to, to ensure that both of you are removed.

there's a way to do things. knowing Marieta....she would not have refused to remove the slogan had he dialogue with her and the asst principals PROPERLY. Sending an email two nights before school reopens was DISRESPECFUL... this is NOT how responsible adults do business. That slogan there LONG TIME....election gone since November 7....he's in office 2 months now....Is he trying to tell me, he has only seen this Old Years Day???? If there was a problem why wasnt there any dialogue. Such a New Year insult to himself, the principal, the students and the public who had no beef with seeing it there!!! TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT. He's not wrong for his reason behind its removal, but he's SURELY WRONG with how it was done.

This whole thing is political. No personal attack here - There are different mode of communication ... a key point to consider and remember however, is this: depending on the situation there is always a best way to communicate; we all make choices that are not always the best ones, but we should avoid being personal/vindictive or political in our responses ... while the Minister is being criticized by the Principal of ASPS openly in the media, on what he did, at the same time this individual appears to have not acted in accordance with General Orders and other policies governing the conduct of civil servants, in expessing her dissatisfaction with the matter via the online media. Based on the turn of events noted above, it is now reported that the officer 'declined to comment'. This shows that none of us are infallible, regardless of personal affiliation, but as intelligent people we should all learn to manage our anger -and avoid personal or political attacks; and most of all - be less of self and let God help us to make wise decisions.

How it was executed was unfortunate, however the decision was a good one in my opinion. I thought the name of the school was "Mighty Mighty Scatliffe" Clearly i am not from Tortola, but the name should be the most prominent thing in the front of a building especially a school.

The slogan was not needed on the building if you wanted to boost the morale of the students keep it within the school. I don't this it was necessary for the school or the former education minister to do such. You don't need a sign to prove to the students that they are good. The parents and the teachers are the ones who should be boosting their kids morale. The sign on the school means nothing if the parents and teachers themselves aren't pushing their child to make a difference. I agree that the way it was done was wrong but I don't see an issue on why the people are so upset as to what it was done.

The truth is. even is Hon. Myron Walwyn was not born in the BVI (which he is) what does where one is born have to do with anything - we are all from an island - we are all island people, whether we from down or up! Yes we know that when looking for a job preference is given to BVIslanders and/or Belongers and that's natural - however, its only because we have adapted the prejudice attitudes of some BVIslanders why we voice the types of racial/prejudice remarks that we do so constantly. I am from here, my mother came here as a child with her parents from St. Kitts (which is not her fault, and she is now an American citizen), my father is from here - does that make me less than anyone? As a matter of fact when you know Jesus, no matter where you are from you become a child of a king and should act like one. People with these mindsets are not planning to go anywhere when they die except in the earth. Its time to really consider the things we say and their merit.
  • Leadership Please (05/01/2012, 17:36) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
Let us all please remember that attitude reflects leadership. It is true that Mr. Walwyn is Mrs. Flax-Headley’s superior and as such has the authority to make decisions about the school. However, most times it is not what you do or has the authority to do; it is how you do it. While Mr. Walwyn should be respected as the minister of Education, Mrs. Flax-Headley deserves the same respect as the Principal of the school. Now as a mature, professional, I would expect that any decision being made about the school at which she is principal should be discussed with her prior to its inception. It is called common courtesy and respect for her as the principal. The last time I check the BVI still operated on a democratic system in which being respectful was highly valued, and not on a dictatorship. It is obvious that Mrs. Flax-Headley felt disrespected by Mr. Walwyn’s action. She did not handle her response to this matter in professional, responsible, mature, manner the same way Mr. Walwyn did not handle his decision to remove the sign in a responsible, mature, professional manner. When you show blatant disrespect for your subordinates this does not reflect leadership, this reflects arrogance. Maybe, Mr. Walwyn may want to model how a real leader conducts himself in the future by giving her the common courtesy or informing her in advance about decisions that are being made about the school at which she is the principal and maybe Mrs. Flax-Headley will follow his leadership style. I do not believe any one of us want a principal who blindly and meekly accept disrespectful attitudes towards her without questioning them no more than we want a principal who acts out because she was disrespected and resulted in her feelings being hurt. In essence, both Mr. Walwyn and Mrs. Flax-Headley should practice being more professional, mature and respectful towards each other in the future.

The school name "Althea Scatliffe Primary School" and that is what needs to be on the building. I really applaud Mrs. Flax Headley for the many changes she made to boost moral. I love the new uniform for the 4 and 5 formers. I think the slogan should have been smaller under the name of the school. I hope she don't lose interest, because I truly feel she has been doing a good job. I do not know how this situation was handled, but I would think a brief discussion would have been held with the principal about the removal. I always say it is not what you do, it is how you do it.
