ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands purchasing its own cruise ship was suggested during the radio programme “Umoja”, which was aired last evening December 15, 2011.

A caller to the programme suggested that the Territory should consider buying its own cruise ship, which he opined would be a major boost to tourism.

Meanwhile, one of the hosts Natalio Wheatley said the idea of the Territory having its own cruise ship actually came to him in a vision, which he said was about getting people together in a big investment club and making the purchase.

He said the cruise ship could be a real carnival cruise line that sails around the Caribbean and making stops to the various countries’ national celebrations.

“And so it would take money to do that but what we are speaking about here is for me a real step up from where we are right now as opposed to just inviting people into our Territory and our country to package our product for us in the form of hotels, in the form of cruise ships in the form of whatever else. We take it upon ourselves to do it for ourselves.”

He said having a cruise ship would make VIslanders the business owners. “So we are not just collecting taxes as a Government nor not just having a few jobs. As we go forward and we are speaking about white paper and the relationship with the United Kingdom and about even ourselves evolving as a territory the next step for us as a people is to become more economically independent and we cannot have true political independence without economic independence".

The BVI can't even manage to handle their own basic necessaties like sewage, drainage or finish a hospital and it's cruise ship they suggesting. Take the smell of sh** out THE CAPITAL first, get the hospital finished then possibly you can look at such things. Also running a cruise ship is just not sticking a boat on the sea and collecting fees. the intricacies of a ship are great and the most important is the supply line to food etc. at low costs. All that will happen is BVI business people would invest their life savings not be able to run in profitably then government would get involved by subsidizing or waste the tax payers money bailing them out and paying expenses for them to be a success while they just collect the profits.

Sometimes before we voice our opinions it would be nice if we do a bit of research to help to bolster our ideas. When a suggestions such as the one above is offered it should be supported by information that can generate meaningful discussion. For example, the pros and cons of entering into such a venture which of course would include preliminary data on what it takes to purchase, operate and maintain a cruise ship. What capacity are we proposing and whether it would be feasible based on the information. It is not every idea that would make a profitable venture. Having said that it is worth exploring further.

It would seem to me a much better approach would be for the BVI to buy a bunch of charter yachts...that way all the guests and all their money stay in the territory...what good will it do the BVI and all the small businesses if tourists get on our ship and sail to Antigua? Please think this through a little more...

You know, what I like about your website is that you get your news from a wide variety of sources. You're not just waiting for news releases or carving up one speech like the Speech from the Throne into five and ten different stories or recycling old stories that have been posted before. You're really going into the community and getting stories and listening to the talk shows and hearing the people. Keep it up, VINO! Now, all you need to concentrate on is getting some hard-hitting, investigative pieces under your belt and you will truly be a media leader. You broke Clyne's salary package and you've broken a few other stories and that's also good but you need to dig deeper and give us the real story behind a lot of what is going on in this place.

Amazing! Is it April fools day? Do people have any concept of how much it costs to build and run a cruise ship? Do they have any clue as to the safety and hygeine standards that would be required? Do they understand that the cost of running a cruise ship is millions and millions a week? Who are we going to put to run such an operation? Its good to think outside of the box but lets be realistic about it please.

This is perhaps the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard! Back in 2005, a 3,000 passenger cruise ship (which is considered medium to medium large capacity) cost approximately ONE BILLION DOLLARS to build. Does the BVI investment club (without outside investors) have that kind of financial power? I highly doubt it! Do you plan to staff the ship with BVIslanders? A ship that size will require approximately 1000 to 1100 staff members. Approximately 4 to 5% would be what most would consider management positions. Another 3 to 5% would be entertainers. The balance would be service and mechanical personnel. Waiters, waitresses, chefs, cleaners, mechanics and engineers, etc. What training do we have in these fields? How many qualified mechanics, engineers and technicians do we have to keep a cruise ship of this size operating? How many BVIslanders want to be waiters, waitresses and cleaners? I'm sorry, but if there ever was an idea that is completely ill suited to expand the employment possibilities for BVIslanders ~ this tops them all! As with everything else, we MIGHT (in time and with a LOT of training) be able to place (approximately) 50 to 75 BVIslanders aboard our very own cruise ship ~ and all the rest would have to be imported. The vast majority of the available jobs aboard a cruise ship are beneath what most BVIslanders would even consider as a career path.

Before everyone knock down the idea, perhaps we should not say the VI but rather OECS or Caricom as a group should either start a cruise line or invest heavily in the stocks of these existing cruise companies to the point of having a "say" in the business. Before we think of how much it costs, we should research how Carnival Cruise Line started. This is a good idea, but my opinion is to spread the risk, cost and profit by including the entire OECS or Caricom.

My suggestion is that we concentrate on getting direct flights from States and encourage guest house and hotel owners to expand and upgrade. Also get West End dock in order.

WHAT!!!! The caller obviously has no idea what is involved in operating a cruise ship! We cant even keep the police marine launch going most of the time! Governments should not get involved in private enterprise - its a recipe for disaster.

Everybody just assuming the worst. Anything is possible. I think it is a BRILLIANT idea for a place like the BVI. It does not have to be a 3000 passenger ship and it does not have to cost a billion dollars like someone posted. It could be a mini cruise ship for maybe 50 - 100 passengers (little bigger than a large mega yacht). It could cost less than $25 million. That is cheaper than the $65 million a jet airliner would cost. It could shuttle between the eastern USA and the BVI with stops in Bahamas and Turks/Caicos. Once in the BVI it could sail around our islands for 1 to 2 weeks. There are dozens of docks or calm harbors where it could park for a day. There will be plenty of work for small boats to take people from the ship to the shore and back. I believe medium to high income families with 2 or 3 weeks vacation time would appreciate such a cruise. It would complement the yacht charter business and be an alternative to an international airport. THINK FIRST people before posting.

Hmm..This gotta be the most retarded idea eva. Ah mean...Why stop at one cruise ship? BVIslanders always thinking small. Lets buy out the whole of Royal Caribbean fleet while we at it. Maybe even a space shuttle to cruise the outer space..that would really help our economy (sarcastic).

For about half of one percent of what a cruise ship cost the BVI could provide the finest ferry service in the world between the USVI and the BVI which would bring people who will stay in the islands and spend their money there rather than spread it all over the Caribbean. Make it easier for long term visitors to get there and treating them like they are welcome will produce far better returns than a fleet of cruise ships.
