ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Police have disclosed they have charged 24-year-old Shemar Richardson of Gene Hill, Tortola in relation to the armed robbery at Paraquita Bay on Sunday, April 18, 2021.

During the robbery, Catherine Pickering, 67, was shot in the head and died a day later.

According to reports, Richardson was an employee of Big Brothers Gas Station in Baughers Bay. The gas station is owned by the family of the late Pickering.

Police had stated that initial reports indicate that a local businesswoman arrived home at Paraquita Bay around 7:30 pm with her day’s proceeds when she was approached by someone demanding money.

The victim, the mother of the businesswoman, then attempted to exit the home when she was shot.

The assailant or assailants made off with a bag containing a sum of money.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), in a statement today, April 22, 2021, said three other persons held for questioning into the murder have been released pending further investigations.

CoP confident in investigating officers

“As a result of the dedicated work of the RVIPF, we were able to bring four persons into custody. One of the four has today been charged. My detectives continue to move meticulously through the inquiry process to ensure no stone is left unturned. I have full confidence in the officers currently in charge. There is no doubt in my mind that they are more than competent, knowledgeable and trustworthy”, Commissioner of Police Mark Collins said.

Mr Collins also made an appeal during a public broadcast this morning, April 22, 2021, for the community’s support in the recent murder.

In his statement, the newly sworn-in Commissioner expressed his desire to see all the individual or individuals responsible quickly arrested and brought to justice.

Issue of confidentiality an international issue- CoP Collins

“I know there are concerns with reporting information to police. This is not only locally but it is an issue internationally. However, I can assure you that whatever information you pass on will be dealt with confidentially. I can also assure you that if any of my officers breach the standard of confidentiality they will be dealt with according to the code of conduct,” Commissioner Collins noted.

The Commissioner said that he personally visited with the daughter of Catherine Pickering yesterday and gave his reassurance of the RVIPF’s commitment to finding the perpetrators.

The Commissioner invites persons who may have information into the identity of the perpetrator or perpetrators in the incident to contact the Major Crime Team at 368-5682 or the Inspector Vernon Larocque directly at 368-9809. Persons can also call the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.

He is among the few that has full confidence in those incompetent, corrupt cops. He just got here, he will learn. The cops will most likely have to release this young man... because they have no evidence! That’s how good they are at their jobs!

I don't believe he did it either. I think they took advantage of his weakness and gave out the information that the gas station was closed and how they would proceed with the crime. I do not believe he did the shooting, but they probably threatened him and his family's lives and that is why he is scared to speak up.

‘Oh what a tangled web we weave/When first we practice to deceive’ means that when you lie or act dishonestly you are initiating problems and a domino structure of complications which eventually run out of control.

This person may have help him set up everything, and he not thinking, if he get caught you on your own, and maybe he were warned not to call the person name if things didn't go down as plan. If you look at this young man's face he could see he's feeling sorry for himself and there is somebody he is protecting. It's more to it, but afraid to say.

Why are some of you talking like you feel sorry of this piece of numbers 2 , he needs to be jail for life if he is involved in this crime, I have no feeling for someone like , that put yourself in that lady family position, he is a scum, plain and simple, and should pay daily if he is involved.

A good security would follow the cash to its destination,. Securing the daily earnings is important,. The Earnings carrier should have been escorted to her destination,.. They plan this on the weakness of the security, looking for their best opportunity,,,

You must try and understand that the mentality and cultural outlook of real VIIslanders is not one of" suspicious distrust hide my property". Police and security locks on doors cars are relatively new and to sn extent a degradation of ones dignity. Relating to those whose arrival and actions has cause such offense cannot be readily accepted. The result is a sense of anguish, resentment and daily stress. While for some, policemen and " good security " in sight causes a sense of safety ,to me it is more a feeling of embarrassment ,humiliation, failure and the reality of how low we have sunk.

Now another family will go to prison. Is this is what we want for our families, for our young male locked up and doing nothing, gaining nothing, creating no wealth and most of all where is God in their lives. Fathers/Guardian this is a lack of dialogue on your part and mothers you are the first teacher to your child ( what are you teaching ). It is time we change the narrative to save our young male. Fathers get with your son/ sons on evening/ in the morning, passionately pray with them, talk with them, let them know how to choose their friends. And government it is time you do something to create a better bond with your citizen, there has to be a change now, as we will run out of young male for our daughters to marry and prison space at Ballo. It is time to save the young male of the BVI. ACT NOW!
