Sheila N. Brathwaite Out! Ayana S. Hull In! as new National Parks Trust Chairperson
Ms. Hull who also served as a former Chairperson of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission under the NDP Administration (2011-2015) replaces Sheila N. Brathwaite who a few months ago was named the British Overseas Territory’s second Complaints Commissioner.
Ms. Hull’s appointment took effect from September 2015 and is expected to last for three years.
The Cabinet Paper advanced early last month by Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. The Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering (R7), whose portfolio includes the National Parks Trust, enjoyed the strong blessings of all according to this news site’s sources inside the Cabinet.
Louis Potter, a retired civil servant who held the post of Chief Planner and NDP Chairman, was named Deputy Chairman of the National Parks Trust Board. The names of the other members of the 11-member board were not obtained as of post time.
The National Parks Trust
The National Parks Trust (NPT) was established in 1961 as a statutory body under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and is responsible for parks and protected areas in the Virgin Islands (VI).
Over the years, the NPT has developed from a voluntary organisation to a fully-staffed operation, overseen by a Board of Directors and managed by a Director who reports directly to the Chairperson of the Board and they have a staff of over 30 persons.
There are 21 National Parks, which encompass a stunning array of land and marine areas including historic sites, tropical forests, bird sanctuaries and one of the world's most famous shipwrecks, each a jewel in its own right. Whether accessed by boat, car or taxi, the Virgin Islands National Parks remain a major tourist attraction.
According to the NPT website, from the inception of the Trust in 1961, reforestation has been one of its major goals with the replanting of trees at Sage Mountain on Tortola and Gorda Peak on Virgin Gorda, both Parks are sites. The annual Arbour Day celebrations have resulted in the planting of hundreds of mahogany and cedar trees throughout the territory.
The Trust is also deeply involved in maintaining the territory’s biodiversity and has led several projects to restore or rehabilitate the Territory’s indigenous species.
Hull a lawyer and author
Ms Hull is no stranger to the National Parks Trust Board having served as a member of the Body under the NDP’s first Administration in government (2003-2007).
In 2004, Ms Hull was admitted as a Barrister in England and Wales and a Barrister of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (Virgin Islands). She currently works at the private firm Harney’s as a Senior Associate in the Funds and Regulatory Division.
Ms Hull, a Virgin Islander, is also the author of Financial Services Demystified, a textbook recently commissioned by the Virgin Islands Government for introduction in public secondary schools.

Nobody put out mrs. brathwaite, she moved to another job.
Mr. Potter HAS BEEN the Deputy Chairman of the National Parks Trust for some years now. Ms. Hull has served on the NPT Board of Directors in the past, so she is not new to the Organization. And yes, as you mentioned, let us not forget, Mrs. Brathwaite was not forced out. She resigned to take up the post of Complaints Commissioner.
The other message in this is that a lot of the people making the decisions credentials need to be checked. Are college educated people making college educated decisions. I'd still like to ask about MVW & Mark's educational background, neither of them really seem to may have gotten a degree out of a cereal box.
