The sheep were frothing from their mouths and suddenly fell and died.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Dead sheep on Joe’s Hill caught the attention of passersby including tourists who were sightseeing, after five from a large flock seem to have mysteriously “drop dead” after frothing at the mouth yesterday afternoon April 22, 2012.

When Virgin Islands News Online visited the area, the reporter saw a blue-green substance oozing from the sheep's mouths and they were lying short distances from each other. Others from their flock were still close by grazing.

This news site contacted Veterinary Assistant with the Agriculture Department Philip Deveaux, who said he was at the scene earlier and from observation, it seemed as though the animals were poisoned presumably from eating something poisonous.

Asked as to whether it is something that the public should be concerned about and the validity of the assumption of poisoning, the veterinary assistant explained that if it was a disease, the process would have taken a few days and farmers would have contacted the Department of any signs of illness among the animals. He said for something to take the animals “just like that” it either has to be gun shots or poison.

He revealed that the Police were also informed and up to yesterday evening they were trying to contact Solid Waste Department to remove the dead animals from the road.

I saw them dead on the road up to 8p last night. Such a cruel thing to happen to them. These sheep have been grazing for a long time on the hill. Shouldn't the owner have had them in an enclosed area rather than letting them wander on the hillside.

I don't not condone cruelty to animals but I do understand why a person may have done this. These animal owners (dog, sheep, cows) have absolutely no respect for others. Where we live we constantly have cows trampling our gardens and dogs that do not belong to us urinating on our front porch. If I had the guts I would do the same, just tired of these people now. Even had a neighbors cow dent my car a few years ago costing me thousands to fix.

What a cruel thing to say. You find the owners and prosecute them for having the animals roamed the street and destroy people's property. It a sinn in God's sight to kill animals. Whoever did this will pay the price one way or another God don't sleep and he sees all the wickedness in people. Today for you and tomorrow for me, if it don't happen to you directly it will happen to one of yours.

When you try to go the legal route to get rid of this nuisance, the owners will deny ownership and since they don't have to register their cows, goats and sheep there's no way you can prove the animals are theirs. I don't condone poisoning them but animal owners here need to take responsibility for their animals and not let them wander onto other people's property destroying their crops and their gardens that they worked so hard to grow! If you don't have well-fenced pasture land then you shouldn't be allowed to keep livestock!!!

sorry to say, these owners need to be punish. I had a incident with wild livestock one actually jump on my car. Who saw what happened told me who the livestock belongs to. And just say it was a lost case. I was not the only one that had run ins with these wild livestock of that particular owner. I had to pay to fix my car. i saw a man at the hospital with a broken hand and stitches over his eye when ask his girlfrend (a fren of mines) what happen if he fall she said No. Driving late a nite and hit a cow. From fort hill to hope hill and from east to fish bay you will always run into cows, sheep and pig. Something need to be done with this wild/stray livestock.

Those sheets always in somebody yard looking for grass or whatever to eat. Somebody had enough and decided to poison them. The owners of these stray animals need to be more responsible. Keep them in a secure area and this more than likely wouldn't happen. Sad though that they were poisoned.

The way animals are treated in the BVI is absolutely unforgivable. Poisoning of beach dogs, parents watching children stone chickens or through kittens in the sea. The disregard for life is being ingrained in the minds of the young...and not so young.
