FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- American Honda Motor Company, commonly known as Honda, has issued a safety recall for several of its vehicle models, citing concerns over a defect in their engines. The recall, announced in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), highlights a manufacturing error that could lead to severe consequences for drivers.

According to the NHTSA's statement on Friday, "Due to a manufacturing error, the connecting rod bearing in the engine may wear and seize." This issue, as reported by Honda, poses significant risks. "A damaged engine may run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury."

The recall affects a range of models and years, specifically:

  • Acura MDX (2016 - 2020)
  • Acura TLX (2015 - 2020)
  • Honda Odyssey (2018 - 2019)
  • Honda Pilot (2016, 2018-2019)
  • Honda Ridgeline (2017, 2019)

Honda has outlined a plan to address the problem. The NHTSA reports that dealers will "inspect and repair, or replace the engine as necessary, free of charge." Starting January 2, 2024, owners of the impacted vehicles will receive letters detailing the defect and their options for remedy.

However, the NHTSA has raised questions regarding the exclusion of certain models from the recall, specifically the 2017 model year Pilot and the 2018 Ridgeline.

Honda is expected to clarify why these particular vehicles differ from those in the recalled model years.
