Series of earthquakes recorded near VI/USVI within past 10 hours

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- There has been a series of seismic activity in the Greater Virgin Islands region, some of which persons have reported feeling, within the past 10 hours.

The largest earthquake measured 4.2 magnitude and occurred at 2:59 AM, on January 8, 2023, according to the US Geological Survey.

Persons in the [British] Virgin Islands have reported feeling the tremor, which was located 75 km NNW of Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands.

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake was then recorded 76 km from Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas Island, U.S. Virgin Islands at 4:46 AM and a 3.4 magnitude earthquake 53 km from Tortola, [British] Virgin Islands at 4:58 AM.

According to Earthquake Tracker, there have been 4 earthquakes in the past 24 hours in the Charlotte Amalie region and 9 in the past 7 days.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has not issued any information about the earthquakes.

The Virgin Islands is in a seismically active zone, which makes the Territory vulnerable to earthquakes.

What to do during earthquake?

During an earthquake, it is important to stay calm. If you are inside stay there, move away from ceiling fans, glass windows and doors, or anything that may fall. Get under a desk or sturdy piece of furniture cover your head and hold on.

If outdoors, move into an open area away from trees, buildings, or utility wires and poles. During an earthquake, the more you move the more likely you are to be hurt, so refrain from entering or exiting a building at the time of the impact.
