BVI Teachers Union supports strike

Meanwhile, the BVI Teachers Union has said it supports the strike action taken by teachers.

“The Executive Committee of the British Virgin Islands Teachers’ Union, stands with the teachers of this territory. Our teachers are tired and frustrated, our cries though acknowledged, seem to be falling on deaf ears.

“We the teachers of the Virgin Islands have always gone above and beyond for our students of the territory; many times sacrificing ourselves. The conditions of our schools and the treatment of our teachers must be a priority and not a reaction. Today we are guided by the declaration, ‘Our working conditions and our environments are our students’ learning conditions and environment,’” the Union wrote in a statement published on October 27, 2021.

And don't tell the teachers that they can apply at the Trust Companies. Unless you have walked in the teacher's moccasins, don't talk rubbish. Let them know where you are employed so they can apply there. Nonsense

Your child's teacher may be a big liar. I more believe that she makes that every two weeks. Stop spreading propaganda.

They showed up for the happy hour drinks. Their pay should be docked for the days they do not work. Fair is Fair.

I can tell you why. The teachers have refused to teach. & You didnt help the child to learn on their own.
It's not about passing subjects, it's about learning. Learning to think & to process new information. Learning what happened before so they can predict what will happen in the future. None of my teachers took my exams for me, I had to learn the material on my own.

Have you never used the students' bathrooms...seriously nasty, and in need of a complete restoration. The hallways resemble a haunted house maze in appearance and size. Yet the Education Minister says he is eager to hear reasons behind the teachers' strike action... as if he has not always understood their concerns? Those poor students and faculty!

Teachers here in the BVI salary is a Teachers AiD salary. Teachers here should be making $120,000-$125,000 a year.

If the speaker would pay his lawyer fees that money the government would have otherwise spent could be used to pay teachers instead.

It was not a strike. It was a sick out.
  • @hello? (28/10/2021, 18:55) Like (4) Dislike (0) Reply
You are just not getting it. $300.00 is nothing. Tell me what can a teacher purchase for her classroom with $300.00 with the outrageous prices everything cost on the Island maybe a chair and a electric fan?

In some states teachers are paid very well, but in others including the USVI, the salaries could improve.

High school teachers do not have to spend money out of their pockets like many people are saying. Its the primary school teacher who are spending their own money to decorate their classrooms stuff for projects are being brought by parents. CTL building (not the junior school) had a problem and they are fixing it. These sickout are not called for and refusing to teach are not right. The minister should just fired them and hire who wants to work.

They start fixing the problem after they got wind of the sick out. If you donot have the facts you should not comment. There are many other issues that exist for years. Every Government come and go and do nothing. I support the teachers. When I was going to school there was a nurse to attend to anyone if you get sick a sick bay you can go to, check how long there have not been a nurse at the ESHS and it is more than four years. There are real concerns here, the teachers are not being political or spiteful.

You will be shocked to know the answer to this the school nurse was removed by the then Public Health Nursing Manager it was not the government it was a poor management decision which has been brought to the now Chef Public Health Officer several times.
