ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - When an elderly person is admitted into a senior citizens centre their wellbeing is turned over to the staff of that home where they are responsible for providing love and care as well as assisting with their hygienic responsibilities.

Because of this, many senior citizens who were admitted into elderly homes within the Territory have been ignored and neglected by their families.

Staff of the Adina Donavon Home for the Elderly (ADHE) brought it to this news site’s attention that many residents of the home are constantly being lied to and fooled by their families.
Manager of the Home Ms. Janeth Georges stated that individuals are admitted into the home for many different reasons.

“The home more serves as a Medical Care Facility rather than a Senior Citizens Centre because not every resident admitted into the ADHE is considered as a senior.”

Speaking to a staff of the Adina Donavon Home for the Elderly, Amelda Blyden, she told Virgin Islands News Online that the residents are constantly lied to and its is not a good feeling.

Ms. Blyden stated that often times when a family brings a resident to the home, they tell the elderly that they are coming back for them tomorrow or coming to visit them soon. She added that the resident’s hopes are all worked up and would sit on the porch for hours waiting on their family or friends who had no intentions of coming back.

“It’s not a good feeling, not a good thing, families should tell them the truth rather than leaving them with that grief that kills them inside and works its way out.”

She said majority of the times when a family member is seen at the home is when a resident is checking in or when they had passed.

Another staff of the home told this news site that residents ask all the time for their family and as staff she tries to comfort them in the best possible way she can.
The staff member stated that the family members of residents in the home need to be more considerate.

She added that the residents of the home are proud mothers and fathers who have worked hard for their children and it pains her to see that they are abandoned.

This month of May is celebrated as Senior Citizens month and due to infrequent visits by families to see the residents at the Adina Donovan Home, the Home sat aside a day every month dubbed, “Family Visiting Day” with the hopes that it will encourage families and friends of residents at the home to visit them more often.

Family Visiting Day is being held every 2nd Tuesday of every month, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Choosing the right senior citizen home can be a confusing decision. There are many types of housing facilities to choose from and if you are not an informed Government you may make the wrong choice...so Ronnie do some proper research.

We can't rely on our children to look out for us anymore. Times have changed. Family means nothing.

I love my parents so much and cannot understand how anyone can forget about the people who gave them life, raised and nurtured them, and loved them unconditionally. Are these families who choose to ignore their elderly that busy that they cannot find an hour after work or a few hours on the weekend???? It actually angers me to think of these self-centered people. This is supposedly a religious community yet everyday people are proving themselves to be so far off track from the path that God wants us to live. LOVE.! Love with all your heart. Care about others more than yourself! And always remember God's commandment to honour your father and mother!

And you would think with so many Virgin Islanders(British) ascribing themselves as millionnaires and billionnaries, these families could hire persons to be responsible for the care of their parents! Shame, shame, shame!

I spoke about this several times on my show and I referred to it as "The dumping of parents by children". I also mentioned about the lawyers that go along with the children in getting the parents signing over all the property and accounts to them. I also said that once these parents are put in there by there children the government must take every attempt to protect them legally and that they should find means of making the children pay for there upkeep.
