Selkridge sizzles in season openers!
After suffering a top ten loss in their last matchup, the pair of wins against the No. 5 University of Central Missouri and the University of West Florida gave the Spartans a 3-1 season record while the Jennies take their first loss at 3-1 and the hosting Argonauts ended the Hemingway’s Island Grill Tournament 1-3.
Junior, Holly Reschke paced the day’s offense, totaling 33 kills while Danielle Selkridge posted 28 swats for the UT squad. Senior, Jessica Yingling posted a pair of double-doubles while setter Kahley Patrick amassed 90 assists. Yingling and Selkridge were named to the All-Tournament team with their performances both days.
Tampa took its top five matchup against Central Missouri in five sets (14-25, 22-25, 25-11, 27-25, 15-8) as the Spartans came back to win 3-2 after dropping the first two frames.
Junior, Reschke sparked the Tampa comeback as she grounded 18 kills on the match. Selkridge hit a blazing .581 as the senior swatted 20 kills to lead the Spartan squad. Freshman, Marissa Lisenbee provided some much needed defense as she posted five blocks to go along with her seven kills. The right side hit at an errorless .438 clip to ignite the UT attack after losing the first two sets.
Selkridge and sophomore, Jackie Neff amassed four blocks each, as sophomore, Neff also landed nine kills without an error on the match. Libero, Frances Cardenas and senior, Yingling provided some much needed defense, tallying 16 digs each. Outside hitting Yingling picked up her first double-double as she had 10 kills to go along with her double digit digs.
Setter, Patrick set 49 attacks in the close win while Libero, Kendall Putnam posted a career high nine digs along with her two service aces in the start.
Central Missouri posted double-double of their own as Aubri Renshaw led all players with 26 kills to go along with her11 digs on the loss. Jennie Libero, Annie Reilly held the defensive tempo with 15 digs.
The Spartans won their second match against the hosting West Florida in three sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-22). Reschke led the attack with 15 kills followed closely by Yingling who swatted 13 and Selkridge with 8. The duo also notched nine and 13 digs respectively as sophomore Patrick posting a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs.
The No. 2 ranked University of Tampa volleyball team split its opening day of matches, picking up a victory against Lock Haven University (3-1)and a loss to the University of Indianapolis (2-3).
The split puts the Spartans at an even 1-1 to start the 2012 campaign. Seniors, Jessica Yingling and Danielle Selkridge ended the day with 33 and 29 kills respectively with Selkridge amassing 13 kills on the day.
The Spartans took their first set of the season against Lock Haven University in four sets (25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18) to sit 1-0 on the season while the Lady Eagles drop their premier match for a 0-1 tally.
Selkridge notched 17 kills in her first season removed from leading the nation in attack percentage while also blocking four LHU swings. Yingling followed with a 14 kill showing. Holly Reschke and Jackie Neff grounded nine and seven kills respectively while freshman Jessica Wagner swatted six. The middle tallied five blocks in her first collegiate match.
Sophomore setter Kahley Patrick assisted 40 UT attacks while also swinging a perfect 5-for-5 in kills. Sloane Bâby led the defense with 10 digs to round out the team victory.
Lock Haven was led by senior Gao Xuan, tallying 17 kills in the loss. Libero, Erin Walsh led the defensive tempo, digging 19 Tampa attacks to lead all players on the match.
The second match of the day saw a top ten showdown between No. 2 Spartans and No. 10 ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds with the latter edging the Spartan squad in five sets.
Yingling led the team with 19 kills as middle tandem, Selkridge and Meagan Burke grounded 12 apiece. Burke swung a scorching .588 attack percentage to lead the offense. Five Spartans tallied double digit digs with Libero, Frances Cardenasleading with 12.
The Spartans will continue their road trip as they head to Denver, Colo. to the Colorado Premier Tournament, with their first matchup against Abilene Christian for Friday, Sept. 7th at noon.
