LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI - Road Town Wholesale Trading Ltd has condemned a recent incident in which a contracted security officer reportedly assaulted a mentally ill man at its Fine Foods location in Long Look.

In a statement, the RTW Group of Companies acknowledged a video circulating that involves the security officer and the customer. They emphasised that they take this matter extremely seriously.

In the short video shared with our News Centre, the security guard is seen spraying something in the face of the customer, who then retaliates by throwing a bottle of water at the security guard.

The security guard then punches the customer in the face.

"At RTW, every customer is our customer regardless of mental capacity, background or circumstances. We are committed to treating all individuals with dignity, respect and care without exception," RTW Group stated.

Security officer not allowed to work at RTW Group location

The company made it clear that the actions displayed in the video do not reflect its values or standards and it does not condone such behaviour in any form and do not accept it from any individual representing the company.

As a result, the contracted security officer involved is no longer allowed to work at any RTW Group location.

Investigation to be conducted

The group reassured the public that a full and thorough investigation into the incident is underway to ensure that all facts are reviewed and appropriate measures taken.

"Our customers are the heart of our business, and our mission has always been to provide unmatched service to our clientele. We remain dedicated to fostering a safe, respectful and welcoming environment for everyone who shops with us."

RTW encouraged the wider community to share any concerns or incidents directly with the company via WhatsApp or its official social media pages so that they can be addressed promptly and appropriately.

This is the attitude that you have towards mental illness? This says a lot about you whoever you are. Even our governments over time have not taken mental illness seriously, or by now we would have had menral care wheter out patient or institutionalized facilities to properly address mental illness. My heart aches for the disconnect between what is right from wrong and what is necessary.
Government needs to address this problem. People who has aversive feelings towards the mentally ill needs to educate themselves about the many layers of mental illness.
These unfortunate souls are people, they are human. They feel pain, rejection and humliation that no human should be subjected to.

When you find yourself being chased down the road by someone swinging a heavy object to hit you, or if you're stuck in your car fearing that a mentally unstable stalker is prowling around, then you can call on the public for some compassion. It's individuals like you who allow this evil to infect the community. The government needs to take action against this madness you all seem to condone by ignoring us Mr. Health Minister, Bishop and others!

"The group reassured the public that a full and thorough investigation into the incident is underway to ensure that all facts are reviewed and appropriate measures taken".
But it seems like before that investigation has been completed, the group has thrown the Security Guard under the bus. The thing with these videos is that they rarely show the start of the incident.

It’s quite unfortunate for the security officer, yes he should have used his training to remove champy from the supermarket. We all know who champy is but none of us is aware what happened prior to the recording.

I hope Rite Way dont act like they have an open door policy for people like THIS customer and throw the security guard under the bus. We all know that they do not like customers like THIS hanging out around or in the store bothering the other customers while they shopping. Just because they are mentally ill does not make the things they get away with ok. The government needs to make their families responsible for them, and if they have no one put them in a facility that will care for them. We have money to pay Vybez but not to take care of things in this country that will improve our quality of life. Vincent you and your people need to start seriously putting a plan in place for all of the mentally ill roaming the streets.
    • @Really? (05/02/2026, 08:50) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
I completely agree with you. All chaos need is order to align and the security officer is highly commended for his smart tactic of reducing the unpredictable threat of the one Champy. I am wondering where is Vybez in this matter especially as we was well paid to sing piss, not protect. The guard was only doing his job to secure his assigned workplace and unbelievably ended up being prematurely relieved by the very same workplace. All because of a video that doesn't tell the whole story. With whom and where exactly does the buck stop?

It seems to me that this is a simple fix. All over now it seems okay to loiter outside the supermarkets and business places. There should simply be a no loitering policy. That should not be a place that you hang out more than 20 minutes if you meet a friend for example because it intereferes with the proper flow of customers in and out of the supermarket. There is a certain gas station in the middle of Town that seems to be happy with the sale of beers and maybe more for this loitering issue is rampant there. This country has changed since a, how should I put this, an influx of certain persons who prefer to hang out on the road to catch up with friends, rather than their place of abode.

In my opinion, a no loitering policy that is enforced by in-house security asking persosns to move on after more than 20/30 minutes standing outside doing nothing but loafing will alleviate this issue. It is disconcerting to try to get into the supermarket after work and be stopped by persons and blocked from your quick grocery grab. Heavy handedness is not the answer by security though. The police being close by should stop by and ask these persons to move on.

You can read it again for your self. ( At RTW, every customer is our customer regardless of mental capacity.) If this is true, why is that at RTW Pasea they do not let TOTAL ( the you man that sits outside sometimes giving people his own money to buy things for him) Sometimes he begs but he says that the security guards will not let him inside to buy anything. Next time Total send anyone to buy anything, tell him he is free to go in and purchase his goods.

People, read and understand clearly.... as rtw said, customer should enjoy safe, reasonable shopping. The very purpose of security. Security is there to provide that safety for customers. Yet, rtw is ever ready to dismiss this guy without a proper investigation. On the other hand , we are referring to a mentally ill person within a community that is an apparent problem. Where is mental health when this mentally ill person is causing problems. Truth by told, that problem is bigger than fine food and it's been in the public eyes for years. The thing is that nothing will be done until the wrong thing happens. As to rtw, quit double talking to save face. This is the same guy that affects your loyal customers in determining if to shop else where because of discomforting circumstance in font of your store

The roll of a security guard at an establishment is to prevent a threat of thief or violence. In my opinion if he ask the mentally challenged individual to leave the compound and he refuses to do so, then the security next step is to refer the matter to the police and keep observation until the police arrive. Champie and others are nuisance to many businesses. In my opinion the security guard was too aggressive and should have handled the matter more appropriately.

There’s a vagrant walking around town half naked. He has a tshirt around his neck, the whole upper portion of his torso exposed, and his pants (without a belt) getting lower and lower. Tourists are definitely afraid of him; you should see them hustling past him.

He hangs out between Bobby’s parking lot and Simply Delicious Chinese restaurant. He’s dirty and smelly. Usually coming up to people and begging for money.

I’m sure the police see him, but nothing is being done about him.

The family of this man need to get him off the street and any other like him. Or the government do something that house them. This is a good project also for the church the bible stated something of the sort" When you see me hungry , you did not feed me, naked and did not cloth me etc" this is how you serve jesus. Finding alternative to the behaviour of such people need to be everyone business. He does not bathe, or keep himself clean and so the smelliness might have been a factor for the spraying, regardless, he could have blind that man immediately. So, the security guard should have been trained to deal with such person, as this have consequences.

in my opinion the security guards today need to understand their position.

When I am tempt to enter a place of business I do not need to have the security in my face asking what I am coming to do. They are far too interactive with customers (paying or otherwise).

They work for the security firm and not for the business entity. They are there ring peac to stressful situations and not to cause problems. If a customer chooses to seek assistance from them and they are able and willing to g to provide it, then let it be. Oftentimes they are too pushy and rude.

    Know your place SECURITY.

    He cannot work at RTW.

He can work at other posts that are under his employers contracts.
