Security for judges & magistrates must be addressed-Justice Charles

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Security personnel for judges and magistrates is one area Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles would like to see addressed in the Virgin Islands (VI) jurisdiction.

Speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online recently, Justice Charles, who will be taking up a senior position in the Bahamas Supreme Court, stated “Security is an issue, we are targets, we are handing sentences…I would say that we have been fortunate that nothing has happened or our security has not been compromised.”

She pinpointed to one trial that involved Denis Campbell and Andrew Milton in 2009. The two Jamaicans were found guilty of throwing Dorcas Rhule from a balcony of a four storey building in 2006. Security for that trial was intense and some of the witnesses, under the witness protection programme, were flown in from overseas to testify.

“During that trial I was not scared, but I was concerned but the court needs to be secured. We are just fortunate in the BVI. It is a problem with the risks involved with our jobs; I don’t see why our security should be compromised,” she emphasised.

According to her, there are standards set by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court whereby every judge should at all times have an armed officer and his or her residence should be protected as well.

“When I say judge I mean Magistrates also. We here have not met those criteria. When I go to the Bahamas I will have an armed driver, not here where my driver has nothing in his hand.”

“We are fortunate here and I must thank the people of the BVI and those sent to prison for not doing anything out of the ordinary. Persons who are high risk like us, to ensure we do our job without fear and favour should at all time feel safe in our homes,” she added.

If you did your job properly the criminals would be behind bars and you would not need armed guards, the justice system is so corrupt most of the judges should be locked up.

They do not send people to jail. regardless, the Eastern Caribbean Court has standards. For instance a judge in St. Vincent where I come from has 24/7 security. Why should a judge here that serves the same court get less.

The judge never said that they alone need security. I agree with what she said that they sentence people and they should feel secure in their homes and offices. If you go to Admin, you got to pass all kind of secuirty. You walk into court, there is no security. I myself felt scared in that place. It is a court. I am sure customs, police and you have better secuirty

You look hot and everything, but I think that you got judge and celebrity mix up? Which one are you? Count it a privilege to be in such a civilized society. You're not in Trinidad, Jamaica, ST. Kitts and the sort. We are still faaaar from beheadings, kidnappings and masacres. This is the problem with the BVI, we accomodate outsiders like celebrities. We pay them big money, pay their houses, give them allowances, while we have folks in the BVI risking their lives and health for our safety and think it much to grant them the bare minimum.

When you write get the facts. You dont pay salaries and allowances. Taxpayers from 9 islands do so. You bring them here to work and they ought to be protected. These judicial officers are lawyers for many years - check out what their salaries are compared to lawyers in private practise. How many BVIslanders have taken up long term judicial appointment. Do you know why?? Terms and conditions are real bad for judges. Maybe, that's why this judge is leaving??? So let them live securely in their homes (delapidated) and work faithfully in their little cubicles we call offices.

Come on, get real. Judges and magistrates send people to prison. They sentence them. When they come out, they meddle in the same community. Why should they not be protected? Customs officere, police officers have firearms. Ask Fraser
