School library fixed, public library ignored- Wheatley

Wheatley recommends extended hours at public library

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With the recently elected government moving at such a fast pace, one talk show host is concerned that while the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) library has been fixed, the Territory’s public library is in need of urgent repairs.

On his radio talk show aired on a local radio station on June 12, 2012, Douglas Wheatley of Speak out BVI said that he is happy with all that the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn is doing, but “there is a bad and good in everything”.

According to Wheatley, there is good in the restoration of the Library and Resource Centre at ESHS, but what is bad is that there are still problems at the main Public Library located in Road Town, and it is in urgent need of repairs.

Wheatley said that as a constant visitor to the library, he is hoping that the Minister will make it his concern to renovate the Public Library.

“There are things that can be done to improve the different situations at the library,” he said, suggesting that the closing hours attached to the library be extended.

The host said that there are many people in the Virgin Islands who finish their work late in the afternoon and would just like to sit in a quiet space and read or do some research. He added that with the existing closing hour, which is until 7 p.m., the people of the VI are denied to use their leisure time doing something constructive.

“Although much people wouldn’t give a positive verbal respond, if the library is opened until later hours many will take advantage of the opportunity.”

“I know that there will be challenges with personnel, and people working over time, but those are things that can be resolved.”

The bottom line is, the Library needs to be moved to an accessible location!! An attempt was made to do just that but the nipple succers blocked the move. Every three mths the facility has to be closed to be fumigated, why? Until we elect a set of legeslators who have the balls to say ENOUGH is ENOUGH, we will experience more of the same.

The location of the public library is a serious problem! It needs to be more central and easier to access, and for the love of God, less pest infested!

I think the priority of the school library was the proper thing to do. The public library should be attended to in the future but there are more important things to do right now. In the mean time books can be opurchased online, even electronically and there is the internet for research. The BVI has not made good use of it's money in the past years and the funds aren't available to do everything at once. Priorities need to be set and long term plans set on the table. What we do from this day forward need to be done properly and at cost with no money being squandered in under the table deals, poor construction and ways to eke money out of the government. We are on our way to accountability and getting value for our money. Hopefully things will only get better.

Well hell!!! They just finished the one for the high school, give them a chance to do the public one nuh man, my gosh, people who're outside always quick to point fingers and cast judgments. When you in the heat of the kitchen you'll then find the answers to the many questions you seem to be so full of.

Excuse me!! When this was placed on the front burner years ago, there was no talk about a High School Library. If you are a member of a party I am not. We all have a right to express our views.

According to the NDP 2011 manifesto " ...your National Democratic Party government will: 1. Build a National Library building 2. Create a public library system anchored by a fully integrated computer network 3. Increase funding for public libraries 4. Support the establishment of a "Literary Festival" 5. Provide a national website for all public records." whether this a a priority or not we shall see.
