Scenic mural adds a bright touch to Fish Bay
Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Conor Looney, Ms Ghana Skelton and other Digicel officials accompanied the artist, Mr Joseph Hodge who gave them a tour of the paintings during a simple commissioning ceremony on June 18, 2015.
Mr Hodge said the paints all depict the extraordinary and beautiful elements of the territory’s landscape, marine life and culture. “The artwork, entitled ‘Extraordinary BVI’ illustrates imagery of the past and present, featuring dance, farming and agriculture, fishing, marine life, and modern day sailing,” he said.
“The artwork depicts my vision of my country. I painted the panels from my memories, intuition and experiences living here. The wall is beautiful because it represents the beautiful place where I live and my love for the ocean,” Mr Hodge added.
The wall is the first of its kind commissioned by Digicel, who said its aim is to beautify communities with paintings celebrating the VI's natural beauty and unique culture.
In adding his bit, Mr Looney said: “We are extremely proud of Mr Hodge and his work visualising the beautiful place we all call home. He has exceeded our expectations; the wall is truly extraordinary. We hope to work with him on future projects that will inspire more local artists.”
Digicel had initially contacted Ms Ghana Skelton of Skelton Quarry Ltd to ask her permission to paint the wall, and she immediately supported the project. "I knew that Digicel and Mr Hodge would not disappoint, he has beautified the wall. We were eager to participate in this project, because our culture is very important and we ought to proudly showcase it. The area has been uplifted and tells a wonderful story, we do hope that passers-by enjoy it," said Ms Skelton.
As recommended also by some of the passers-by, Ms Skelton said her company will further enhance the area by improving the parapet area at the wall to allow persons to get as close to the mural as they may desire.

Hush!! Or better yet ask Digicel how much they paid!! You just might be $%%^& surprised.
All the more reason to be careful how development mushrooms and how important culture and the environment is to the BVI. Years ago I approached TCPD about preserving Old Main St and houses as a historical district. LP replied, "OR we could just take pictures". Living IN culture is far more effective than looking at a book...
