SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – As first and accurately reported by Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) the Department of Waste Management has completed the construction of a storage facility for used oil at a newly opened Waste Oil Facility in Sea Cow’s Bay.

The facility became operational on Friday, April 5, 2024, and can now store 20,000 gallons of used oil.

VINO had reported that construction of a concrete base for about four storage tanks located behind the now-abandoned Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay on the main island of Tortola started in February.

Deputy Director, Mr. Anslem Myers said that the department has retained the services of a company who will be responsible for managing the facility and collecting used oil from around the public garbage bins throughout the Territory.

According to a release from the Ministry of Health, “Residents are asked to place their used or waste oil around the public bins to be collected and transported to the facility. Persons can also take small quantities directly to the site Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. beginning Monday, April 8., 2024.”

“We will be accepting small quantities of waste oil from households, small commercial businesses, hotels, restaurants and government organisations,” Mr. Myers added.

He added that oil products in large quantities or from large commercial businesses such as charter or fuel companies is strictly prohibited.

Back in February 2024, the Director of the Department of Waste Management, Mr Marcus E. Solomon, told our news centre that one aim of the project, is to reduce the number of fires and smoke occurring at the Pockwood Pond Dumpsite.

When the tanks are full, where will all of this oil be deposited? It will not evaporate like water so where will it go? In this heat, I hope it doesn't catch fire or that would be another horror.

So when these tanks get full up to the brink and can't hold anymore oil what are they going to do afterwards.

Question: - Are they going to recycle this oil or just dump it somewhere else? Please explain
