ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Three second half goals finally saw the Wolues record their second successive victory and hand Old Madrid a third straight loss in the Terry Evans League on Sunday December 11, 2011 under lights on the A.O. Shirley Ground.

The first half though had been a different story as despite being under siege for prolonged spells, Old Madrid could have and should have gone into the break ahead.

Right from the whistle, the Wolues poured forward creating chance after chance, but finding Dowlyn Daley unbeatable in goal.

Mark Pritchard, Martin Cook, James Shearman and Matt Moss all went close for the Wolues in a frenetic first 15 minutes. Moss in particular should have done better from a Shearman corner when he rose unmarked at the near post only to head high and wide.

Old Madrid was not fazed and started to enjoy more possession, playing the sort of football that is a delight to watch. On a fast break, Kenmore Peters pounced on a defensive error by Boed Van Kuijck. He laid off a fine pass to Sheldon Harry who jinked past a couple of defenders, but then having created the opportunity for a shot decided to pass to Franklyn James. He took a shot, but under pressure from the defense was unable to trouble Will De Hoo in the Wolues goal.

Down at the other end Daley was a touch fortuitous to get away with a rough challenge on Lawrie Kearns. Wolues players and some of the crowd howled for a penalty, but Referee Carl Barrett rightly waived away the protests. From the resulting corner, Marc Savage fired wide from 18 yards.

Galvanised, the Wolues continued to launch wave after wave of attacks.

Jonny Evans went close, a cross from Shearman was met first time by Savage, but his volley went wide. Shearman then failed to trouble the keeper with a free kick and a series of corners resulted in some staunch Madrid defending.

Michael Dennis made a last ditch clearance with a header from one and then Daley atoned for a dropped ball by pouncing first to gather the loose ball inside the 6 yard box.

It looked like one of those days for the Wolues when every chance goes begging and a goalless draw seemed inevitable.

However, Madrid weren’t done by any means and as the first half drew to a close Harry, Elroy Mills and Peters all had chances to open the scoring, before a James strike brought out a diving save from De Hoo.

Peters again went close in the dying seconds, but headed narrowly wide from a corner.

Whatever was said during half time by the Wolues certainly worked as they started the second half again on the ascendancy, but playing more controlled football.

Making the Madrid players chase the ball and then exploiting the gaps that opened up was beautifully proven the best method of attack as within 5 minutes a sublime “give and go” between Evans and Shearman resulted in the former sliding a well placed shot inside the far post giving Daley no chance.

Although tiring legs were beginning to show, Peters was still causing problems for the Wolues and with the introduction of Dion Clarke, Old Madrid found some fresh impetus.

Putting himself about and harrowing the Wolues, Clarke opened up space for the likes of Harry and James, both of who went close to leveling the game. However, Madrid was undone by a mistake from Hanif James that allowed Savage to fire in the Wolues on 70 minutes.

A harmless long ball was allowed to bounce and James then miss controlled the ball giving Savage the chance to show a great burst of speed to power home past the advancing keeper.

Daley in fact was hurt in the attempted save and had to be replaced by James.

The game and the points were wrapped up ten minutes later when Savage spotted the goalie off his line and successfully sent an audacious lob from wide out on the right into the back of the net, for his second and the Wolues third goal.

After the game, Jonny Evans praised Sherman’s half time talk and enjoyed his opening goal.

“Jubilant and happy,” he said. “A good half time talk by Shearman and Cooky about short passes and using one two’s and it showed passing the ball, simple stuff, equals a goal!”

Dion Clarke was honest in his appraisal of the Madrid team which is based largely on players over 40 years old.

“Well, half of the game is all Old Madrid can do, we are all over 40 and the oldest guy is 55, there is no way we can play 90 minutes and run a team that is youngest than us. I take my game seriously I feel 16 and look 21.” he quipped. “The more games we play the better. We like to win but we just want to be in there, we stay together and play a lot of tournaments, which we win.”
