ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate Sandy M. Harrigan-Underhill, a former Principal of Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), is back on the NDP's 2023 elections slate, following defeat in the last General Elections in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Ms Underhill, who ran as an At Large candidate in 2019, has returned as a replacement for Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) who had indicated he would be exiting politics after the House of Assembly dissolves.

The HoA was dissolved on March 10, 2023, to pave the way for General Elections.

According to a poster on Ms Harrigan-Underhill’s plans, if she is elected she will establish a plan for District 4, along with establishing a district office in the community to allow constituents to have access to the district representative.

Plans

Further, Ms Harrigan-Underhill says she will collaborate with other elected representatives on youth empowerment, sports, a national business bureau, and educational areas amongst other issues.

The first Director of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Institute of Education, Ms Harrigan-Underhill noted that she wants a strong public-private partnership between the government and agencies responsible for social services amongst other plans for the district and territory.

The NDP's Fourth District candidate holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Grand Canyon University and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Teacher Education from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Where is Luce? Where is Luce? Where is Luce? IMHO, the District 4 race is Luce’s to lose and is probably losing it slowly with the pace picking up now. Luce had Holden opportunity to strengthen her candidacy but has committed campaign malpractice. Luce knew she was running since narrowly losing to the Hon Mark Vanterpool in 2019 and had window where she would be the only candidate on the trail and any issues brought up would land without a response from other combatants. That was a golden opportunity that was left on the table. Politicians who don’t want to do work, making campaigning a top priority, is doing the voters a disservice and probably should representing the people to others who want and are willing to wear out some tennis shoes. Luce had the opportunity to provide some large ground to make up by opponents but looked a gift horse in the mouth. Now the other combatants are on equal footing.

Endorse the notion of campaign malpractice. The conventional wisdom is that if a candidate is on the trail alone, he/she has an advantage. It is an advantage which should have been capitalize upon. But it is no surprise, for the campaigning indifference was present in 2019. She may indeed win but she should be winning going away. There was a former from east who shares the sane attitude about campaigning and flash in the pan but cannot get any traction. Degrees alone is not enough to get the job done. The art of politics is a different animal altogether. A case in point is HL Stout who had degree but he mastered the art of politics and is standard through which other politicians are compared.

This lady was the principal of the high school and never one day publicly advocated to get her partner Myron the then Minister of Education to take our children and teachers out of that moldy health hazard building at Pasea where they put them after Irma. They were there too long and now many persons have lingering health conditions as a result. Now we see why. She is too close to Myron to call out wrong and injustice and the owner of the building is the campaign financier for them. The more things change the more they remain the same. Not my family and I vote.

I am not a party person, but many see Luce Hodge Smith as the best candidate to vote for in District 4. She is a mature, experienced, honest and approachable person who cares about people and the country.
