ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two Virgin Islands talk show hosts recently traded words on live radio after their views clashed on the Government’s move to address a 30-year outstanding issue of retirement benefits for former legislators.

Former ‘Hard Talk’ radio co-hosts, Julio S. Henry and Rosemary Cindy Rosan-Jones, who now hosts the social media show 'Cut Deep', clashed on the Thursday, May 20, 2021, edition of the ‘Da Morning Braff’ hosted by Floyd Burnett aka 'Heritage'.

Issue was a 'hot potato' - Premier Fahie

While Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has since said the issue of retirement benefits in the House of Assembly (HoA) was a “hot potato” that was ignored by previous administrations, he said every week he would receive calls from former legislators asking to address the issue once and for all.

The Premier said; however, some are now using the issue as a tool for re-election. “As a matter of fact, they are now spinning it that we have done it thinking that we will not be re-elected. So, they sidestepped the issue and left it for someone else to deal with.”

On the Thursday edition of ‘Da Morning Braff’, Rosan-Jones had questioned whether it was the right time for such a move to be made by the Government.

“If the opposition and the Government is getting a full retirement pay for three years… I have no problem with that,” Henry said.

'I have no problem with that' - Sam Henry

After hurling expletives live on the radio, Rosan-Jones further spoke about the other benefits of legislators, and whether the decision of the House came at the right time.

According to Henry, “They already passed it. I don’t have any problem with them passing the bill… its fine with me. It doesn’t matter what the Government does, who does it and when they do it… it will never be at the right time for Cindy,” Henry responded.

Lashing back at Henry's comment, Rosan-Jones maintained, however, that she is a topic on the agenda of the Government. “Their topic is me, their agenda is me… Sam has no problem with the Government unless it’s attacking his taxi business. Nobody cares to say what Sam has to say anyways,” Rosan-Jones said.

Public sector compensation needs overhauling altogether, ie, civil servants, elected officials.......etc. Elected officials serving twi consecutive terms in office and receiving a very generous compensation retirement is unfair relative to civil servants, the work horses, who have to serve at least 25 years is unfair. It is honor and privilege to serve the community and territory in elected office. While serving as ministers, backbenchers or opposition, they received generous compensation, ie, $2000 or $3000 per month allowance. The housing allowance should be eliminated unless civil servants get housing allowances. But one will quicker see green mule flying. Elected officials who served 15 more years of service should receive compensation that is fair and reasonable. Elected officials who also serve a certain number of years as civil servants perhaps can combine elected office and civil service, avoiding double dipping. While the HOA is soberly looking at compensation, it also needed to look ok at retirement system unfunded liability that is probable approaching approx $400M. Retirement is currently on pay as you go. And one of these days when serious cuts have to be made retiree pension will be on the chopping block if the decision continues to be kicked down the road. The proverbial kick the can down the road.

I dont believe that one term legislators should be given a package but it really needed to be looked at. Cindy needs to just shut up and enjoy her retitement.
