Sailing: VI shines in St Croix; Lettsome places in Florida

According to the RBVIYC, the regatta in Clearwater, Florida attracted 80 entries in the Laser Radial class. “The conditions were tricky throughout the regatta with light and shifty winds and Lettsome sailed four races in the qualifying series with mixed results but enough to qualify for the gold fleet,” they noted. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands (VI) continues to make great strides in the world of sailing, following stellar representation from VI’s Thad A. Lettsome in Florida and more great performances at the Optimist Regatta in St. Croix.

Optimist Regatta Win

Three BVI boats were racing in St Croix this past weekend, two in the Multihull division and one in the Optimist Regatta.

According to a release from the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club (RBVIYC), Victoria Rowlette competing in the 10 boat Opti Green Fleet made participation in a total of 15 races, placing first in seven. Her total final score of 19 points counted just first and second place finishes, making it her first Optimist regatta win.

In the multihull division, Eddie Brockbank and his Corsair Sprint 750 took the bullet in all six of the races to bring home first place.  Kevin Rowlette in his Corsair F27 claimed a full house of second place finishes to take second overall.

Lettsome Places 8th

Meanwhile, Lettsome has also been in action overseas, competing at the 2019 Laser Midwinters East Regatta at the end of February.

In the finals series, five more races were completed and Lettsome dug deep to pull himself up to finish eighth overall.  According to Lettsome, "My starting has clearly gotten better… I finished the regatta with no bad starts but I still need to work on my first upwind.”

He says it was great to get back in touch with the youth fleet after sailing two senior regattas.
