FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- The Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) in the US Virgin Islands (USVI) announced Tuesday, June 14, 2022, an air pollution alert for dust from the Sahara Desert in Africa.

The dust causes the skies around the Virgin Islands to be hazy, which reduces the visibility and results in poor air quality, DPNR said. This results in dust storms and a rise in warm air. These sandy dust particles are transported from the North African desert westward over the Atlantic Ocean across the Caribbean.

The agency said meteorologists at the National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico have confirmed that the bulk of the current dust episodes are decreasing and will continue to clear through tomorrow, and that the territory should see the tail end of the storm by Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

There will be another dust episode of similar intensity passing through the territory during the weekend.

These dust clouds can reduce air quality and cause health concerns, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies.

I don't like sand. Especially dust storms.

Man, this Saharan dust is a bummer! Hope it clears out soon. I've been feeling kinda congested lately. Hopefully the weekend dust episode won't be too bad so we can still enjoy the beach. Stay safe everyone! Grade Calculator

Stay safe everyone! The DPNR's air quality advisory regarding Saharan dust reminds us that even beautiful places like the Virgin Islands face environmental challenges. Reduced visibility and poor air quality can impact outdoor activities. While waiting for clearer skies, maybe it's a good time to relax indoors and play some Block Blast. The update suggests things will improve soon, so hang in there!
