ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The RVIPF is still recording high numbers of thefts of cellular phones, iPods and laptops and is advising persons to protect their valuables during the holiday season.

These items along with handbags are being stolen from motor vehicles, store counters, in crowded bars, on benches at sporting and entertainment facilities. More recently, members of the public have reported their valuables missing after given a ride to a stranger. Three such thefts were recorded within the last month.

On Thursday, Police charged Lumumba Ifill of Purcell Estate with handling stolen goods in relation to an iPod taken from the basketball court in Purcell Estate. Similarly, on Friday, two males, a 15 and 17-year-old, were charged with theft in relation to another stolen iPod. After being questioned in the presence of a school counselor, the two handed over the stolen iPod.

Acting Deputy of Police Alwin James states that while Police will be increasing their visibility during the holiday season, it is still very difficult to prevent these types of crimes if owners do not take personal responsibility to reduce the risk.

“Valuables should never be left unattended particularly electronic items. However, in the event these items are stolen, there are downloadable features on the popular smart phones, laptops and iPods that allow persons to trace these items in case of theft,” he said.

Most of the newer smart phones, he noted, offer free applications which give the ability to trace cellular phone anywhere on the island. If lost or stolen, the owner can go online and trace the phone with the app to its location anywhere.

James strongly advises that persons seek the assistance of a police officer before attempting to retrieve or recover any stolen property.

He noted that some phone applications also offer remote access shutdown features that if stolen would allow the owner the ability to prevent the phone from being used and protect confidential information from identity theft.

Tools from vehicles, storage sheds and construction sites are also becoming popular items for thieves. Licence stickers, vehicle parts and boat engines are hot commodities as well especially when left for days unattended in parking areas around the airport or at the Trellis Bay. Persons are advised to plan ahead for securing these conveyances before leaving the island.

Particularly around the Christmas Season, Police, through public service announcements and press releases, are urging the public to be vigilant and to do all that is possible to avoid being a victim of potential thieves.
