HAMILTON, Bermuda– Officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) were among regional participants who recently completed an intensive eight-week ‘Train-the-Trainer’ programme in Bermuda, designed to strengthen armed policing capabilities across the British Overseas Territories.

Delivered by the International Policing Assistance Service (IPAS) and supported by the UK Home Office, Police Scotland, and Greater Manchester Police, the training concluded on June 20, 2025. It focused on Armed Response Vehicle (ARV) tactics, equipping officers with advanced skills in responding to high-risk incidents involving firearms or threats to life.

'Standardised training model'

Throughout the programme, officers received instruction on de-escalation strategies, suspect extraction, and officer safety protocols, guided by UK firearms subject matter experts. The course aimed to establish a standardised training model across the Territories and to build capacity within each participating force to deliver specialist training locally.

The programme was developed in consultation with Police Commissioners from across the Territories and was part of a broader strategy to enhance regional security through consistent training and operational standards.

Officers from Anguilla, the Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and the Turks and Caicos Islands took part.

His Excellency Andrew Murdoch, CMG, Governor of Bermuda, visited the training cohort at the start and during key scenario-based exercises.

He commented, “It was impressive to witness the professionalism and skill of the IPAS and regional officers in action. The sustainability and local delivery made possible by this model will contribute significantly to safer communities across the region.”

Training provided officers with 'critical skills'- Acting CoP

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool, in a press release from the RVIPF, praised the initiative, stating, “This training provided our officers with critical skills and the ability to replicate those standards within our own force. It also fostered strong regional bonds that will enhance collaboration when responding to serious threats. We are proud of our officers’ performance and remain committed to ongoing development that strengthens policing in the Virgin Islands and the wider region.”

As part of its broader mission, the RVIPF emphasises that its officers undergo continuous training and accreditation. This ongoing commitment not only ensures high standards of professionalism but also builds trust and confidence in the force.

The successful completion of this programme enhances the RVIPF’s tactical capabilities and reflects the growing spirit of cooperation among the Territories, setting a new standard for regional law enforcement excellence.

At JEDI... When you all had dedicated local people who would enforce the dam law you all bitch about it. Walters and Hill used to enforce immigration law. D. Fahie and D . Smith used to enforce Customs law. A few police officers used to G. Callwood, Farington enforce the law till they put them behind a dam desk.

It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.
