ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– With the spotlight shone on the issue of tint on vehicles recently, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is offering tests for tints free of cost tomorrow, May 7, 2021.

Additionally, if the tints are found to have exceeded the legal limit persons would be granted a pardon.

“Officers can tell you without penalty at the Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Expo at the Noel Lloyd Park tomorrow only,” the RVIPF said in a statement today, May 6, 2021.

The RVIPF said it will be present at its booth to share information and test the tint of window vehicles from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

Persons can drive their vehicles to the entrance of the brick path between the First Caribbean Bank and the Park to have their vehicle’s tint checked.

Heavy fines for tints

Police are urging persons to use the opportunity now to ensure their vehicles do not exceeding the tint stipulated in the law because the penalty is high. The fine for each window that exceeds the tint limit is $750.

Front windows should have a reading of no less than 35% light penetration while the front windshield should have no tint at all. Back windows should have a reading of no less than 20% light penetration.

“Store-bought tints combined with factory tints will likely exceed the tint requirements stipulated by law,” the RVIPF said.

According to the RVIPF, heavily tinted vehicles are generally used by those who want to hide their identity or carry illegal weapons or goods. “Citizens who want safer communities should take a strong stance against criminality, by abiding by the law.”

Tint concern was raised by Hon Kye M. Rymer

Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), speaking during the Seventh Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola, on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, said it has become increasingly obvious that some vehicles on the territory's roadways are not in compliance with the law.

“There is a restriction on tint [but] we see a number of vehicles where you can’t even see in the vehicles. I know at some point the police would be out there stopping and doing their checks [to ensure compliance with the tint laws]." Hon Rymer said.

Mr. Rhymer it should be across the board because police and politicians use tints for illegal activities as well and some of you politicians have heavily tinted vehicles hiding up and down cheating on all you wives and husbands and doing shady deals with some of the same criminals

All of them. Except the 2 that have helmets, and insurance and legal plates. Get rid of the illegal tints and get rid of the illegal scooters and scooter riding style. Just look at the laws that are in place and apply them. You will in time with diligence end up with a law abiding society with the odd illegal person. What we have now is anarchy. Cops and Tints is stupid. In one year it is cleared up by DMV. No one gets licenced with Tints. Police then stop people with licences after that date that have illegally reapplied tints and the fine is now x10 for deliberate and wilful obstruction of the law. Tidy this lawless place up. Please.

Hypocrisy. I can't see in most government ministers vehicles. Let's start from there. Let's set some examples for the rest of population to follow. Thanks.

Kye is now u gettin out that seat. I ain’t for the tint on the windshield that’s totally wilfull charge them yes and for 5 % on all glass. But u see that 20% on the 4 passenger doors that’s needs to be changed. What is 35 % to help u from the suns etc . It even helps protect the interior of the vehicle.

35% is too light on the front.

20% on the back with factory tints should be permissible without harassment.

It might be free now and without penalty, but whilst my tints might not be heavy on the eyes the machine could read that the tint is illegal. That happens because some vehicles have some manufacturers tinting and then the additional tint placed on can put you in the red.
Now whilst it is without penalty now, I bet that the officer(s) doing the testing will be targeting my vehicle afterwards...I'll pass on the offer, thank you.
