BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The former Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA) and businessman, Mr Julian Willock, has left many still wondering if he will run for office in District Three during the next general elections, as his bid depends on the decision of the Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Hon Julian Fraser, RA (R3).

Hon Fraser, 75, the current District Three Representative, ran on a Progressive United (PU) ticket during the 2023 general election.

Although he won his seat, he was in the Opposition together with members of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) until late 2024, when he crossed over, joining the government’s side, becoming Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change.

Giving Fraser a fair chance

Speaking on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM, Mr Willock responded to the question everyone has been asking.

He said that while Hon Fraser is now a member of the government, he understands he is still a member of his party, PU.

“I am not aware of what decision he is going to make to running again, whether he is running on his own or rejoining the Virgin Islands Party.”

Hon Fraser rejoining the VIP, he told the co-hosts, is “something I would love to see”.

Mr Willock acknowledged the observation by many that he has been “quiet” for some time following Hon Fraser’s crossover.

“It was to give him a chance,” Mr Willock explained, “It wouldn’t be fair for me to...he’s over now with the government and in the district.”

Running or not ‘I have love for my people’

All in all, Mr Willock said, while he has had conversations with Hon Fraser, it is still a decision for the Deputy Premier to make.

In the interim, Willock and his District Three Committee have restarted programmes in the district.

“I’m doing my back-to-school on August 31st at the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School grounds, following that we’re doing another big job fair, and we’re hoping to have a Senior Citizens Social.”

The committee hopes to end its year of giving with a Christmas Party in December.

“I have love for my people, and I will do whatever I can to serve my people.”

Mr Willock reiterated a statement he has said many times, that there are many ways to serve one’s country.

“Elected office is just one of many.”

He doesn’t like public opinion getting in his way, spoiling his plans for personal enrichment.
