ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This morning July 1, 2012 around 5:20 a.m., a car crashed on Waterfront Drive, Road Town, only a few meters away from a BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) high voltage transformer, running into a barricade pole for the transformer instead which may have prevented what could have been a serious catastrophe.

The female passenger, who is said to be employed at one of the supermarkets, was injured and is currently a patient at Peebles Hospital. The vehicle has been severely damaged.

According to hospital sources, the female does not seem to be suffering from any life threatening injuries and so far is being treated for a dislocated shoulder. The male driver did not appear to have suffered any injuries. The two were said to be the only occupants of the car.

An eyewitness told this news agency that the four-door grey Mazda, coming from the western direction, seemed to be racing with two other cars and apparently lost control, ran into and uprooted the pole that was part of a barricade for the BVIEC transformer. The transformer is located opposite the now defunct Colombian Emeralds.

Apart from the uprooted pole, the transformer was not damaged.

Members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force as well as officers from the Fire and Rescue Department were on the scene.

Virgin Islands News Online will bring you more details as it becomes available.

A previous comment said he was racing with others cars, wow this could have really been a terrible terrible accident for the bvi comunity in the whole this morning JUly 1st as people take early morning walks as early as 4:00 am at times and they could have been on that same path. I does get so scared for people who i see walking on the road exercising whether morning or afternoon. Why because we all know the way my BVI use to be long ago is not so anymore. People drive without due care and discretion for others. And the sad path about it when they damage your vehicle it is a whole set of problem to get their insurance company to pay for it. I have a co-worker having lots of problem right now from an insurance company where it is factual that the client took full responsibility when he give his report to the police and after goign to his insurance company, it seems as if they made him to change his statement so that they don"t have to pay the other party any money. Besides damaging another vehicle he could have kill a few persons this morning. I was at the scence after it happened and parts was all over the place as far up as where them boys does wash down vehicles opposite the stop light. I think he needs to pay for all the damages he did to the government property. I saw him as well an dnot a scratch on his body, he better give God thanks and praise he is alive today. Now tell me where the hell in town to race car these people sickening messon. He must have hink he was on Half Way Street, jamaica going down town. I also understand that he did not have a license or if he had it was expired one or the other.

one of the issues is that when the traffic cops go to the scene of an accident they are not equipped with breathalysers kit, field drug test kits ect to do test so its just hear say and smell

The police have the power under the law to take them directly to the hospital for a blood test..so that is no excuse…

Breathalyzer and field drug tests are not in the LAW therefore Police cannot use them. Even though Police have been asking for them for years now our LAWMAKERS have seen it fit to ignore these requests and much needed resources. However Police can request the person to accompany them to the hospital to submit to a blood or urine test. The person can refuse and if they do they would be arrested.

we need some education about the dangers of car accidents as more people die in car accidents than in boat or plane!
