NASSAU, Bahamas- During a Caribbean tour marred by protests over Britain’s colonial past, Prince William has suggested that the British royal family would support the Bahamas’ decisions about its future.

“We support with pride and respect decisions about your future,” the Duke of Cambridge said at an official reception in Nassau on Friday, March 20, 22, hosted by the island’s governor-general. “Relationships evolve. Friendship endures.”

‘Colonial tour’

Prince William, the second in line to the throne, has been on a week-long tour of Caribbean Commonwealth countries with his wife Kate Middleton in honour of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.

Protestors have dubbed the royals’ Caribbean trip the “colonial tour,” with demonstrators demanding that the royal family apologize for its role in the slave trade that saw millions of African slaves being shipped to the region to work under inhumane conditions.

Jamaica going Republic?

In Jamaica on Tuesday, protestors outside the British High Commission in Kingston demanded that the British monarchy pay reparations for its role in the slave trade, according to reports.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew M. Holness told Prince William that his country was “moving on” in remarks that suggested the country would go the way of Barbados, which became a republic last year and removed the Queen as its head of state.

Barbados the latest to remove Queen as Head of State

Barbados, in November 2021, officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State and became the world's newest republic.

The island was one of England's first slave colonies. English settlers first occupied the island in 1627 and, under British control, it became a sugar plantation economy using enslaved people brought in from Africa.

Slavery was abolished in Barbados in 1834 and the country became fully independent in 1966.

Well, it seems important to some people to keep the "Colonial wave alive" As an African what was done to a race of people because of the color of their skin cannot be adequately described. We should remember that the UK thought it was the "superpower" during this was not the only nation involved in the exploitation of Asia, the Middle East Africa, North and South America, or the West Indies. The Danish and the Spanish and others were to a lesser degree involved in the "rape" of the world for their lust, wealth and power. The African race has survived these superpowers against all odds paralleling or in some cases surpassing their former exploiters in Science, Education and Nation building just to name a few. They have shown the resilience to endure under circumstances that have become the admiration of many. Here is the problem, Some of our people have become our new "masters" their greed and quest for power and wealth seem deeper than the deepest abyss. Those who are now our administrators are more interested in filling their pockets and those of their family, friends and supporters while ignoring the plight of others. In an effort to hide their violations they seek to keep us in mental slavery pointing to colonialism as the cause of our perceived failure which they have created. When our people recognize the true cause of our problems only then will we be truly emancipated.

GOOD for the Bahamas. However, we the people of the BVI do not want independance nor to become a repulic. Why? Well I do not have answer that for it is clear more than ever. The corruption in this place is prevalent. Imagine if the Uk did not look over us. Both VIP and NDP members would have became billionaire! Let's not forget their close friends and family. I thanks God for the Uk intervention.

You are not speaking for the VI you're speaking for your self. I would be interested in you expanding your " What if theory" of what would have happened if the UK didn't look over us. It would be interesting reading about a tiny country being run by corrupt leaders and benefiting families and friends. Please include the good points as well as the bad ones.

Is it coincidence that the richest places in the Caribbean are the British Overseas Territories?

Maybe some people want Independence. But do you really think these Islands are prepared for it?
Can you imagine what this place would have been like had the UK not sent the Marines to help? This place was devastated and chaotic, and some people (even people who were not “in need”) were looting stores and other peoples homes. The storm was frightening enough.

Freedom from what? Freedom from exploitation by a thieving ,self serving rulling elite? Freedom from control of the Premier and the government by drug cartels? Freedom for the two thirds of the adult population who have bo vote? Freedom for non belongers who currently exist under conditions that are the nearest in the modern world to slavery?

Dude, go siddung as if the royal family can stop the Bahamas becoming a republic. The Queen is the ceremonial head of state and cannot stop the Bahamas, an independent country from becoming a republic. The whole head of state was an anachronism, an idiosyncrasy, quaint, quirk arrangement to start with. Time to shed the yoke of colonialism. The BVI still has that yoke that is choking and suffocating it. But the BVI is too duncy to see what even the blind can clearly see.
