SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news centre is that Sea Cows Bay resident and Deputy Director/Director of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Agency Mr Roy E. Barry has retired.

It is believed that Mr Barry had over 36 years at the BVI Social Security Board and, after moving up the ranks, end his career as the Director of the NHI.

The Social Security Board, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Social Development, is now seeking to fill two senior posts which are; Deputy Director for NHI and Deputy Director of the Social Security Board. Both posts have been advertised.

Promotion, Retirement 2 posts vacant

The Deputy Director for Social Security Ms Lorie A. Freeman was promoted recently to become the Director of the Social Security Board, following the retirement of  Jeanette A. Scatliffe-Boynes. This leaves two vacancies, including the one Mr Barry has retired from.

When contacted, Mr Barry said he had no comments.

Many believed he would have moved up the ranks to the Director’s post, given his seniority and years of service; however, that did not happen, according to a member of the Board who spoke to our newsroom on condition of anonymity.

Mr Barry, an indigenous Virgin Islander, is also involved in other nation-building activities and has served on many Government Statutory Boards.

Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from the Acting Chairman of the Social Security Board, Mr Brodrick Penn, were unsuccessful.

          @ @ I know:
I did say check the dictionary but like you can't read and understand. But let me school you, the word 'indigenous' means (of people) inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists. Now unless you tell me that you are an Arawak or Carib you do not consider your self indigenous. Y'all like to talk about people hating on you but you can't accept a correction in the article. It is irresponsible journalism. Where was the hate in my initial post? Now go drink some piwari and chill. Oh you don't know what that is? Google will hep you!

Is he preparing himself to enter politics as a candidate in the 2027 General Elections either Territorial at Large or D3 representative candidate? It is left to be seen. However I will select him to lead the new horseracing and gaming Commissioner in the Virgin Islands

The greedy healthcare providers may try to get one of their own or someone to serve their interest in there.

The composition of the NHI/SSB Board raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest, as it includes individuals and healthcare providers whose priorities may not align with the best interests of the National Health Insurance (NHI) system. This misalignment is evidenced by the dramatic increase in laboratory fees, which have risen from under $50.00 before NHI implementation to over $225.00 currently.

Fees were recommended by the consultants at the inception and have not been changed since. They simply took US Puerto Rico and South Florida Medicaid rates.

I remember Mr. Barry at SSB since it was upstairs old Road Town Wholesale (now Rite Way) when it was where the shoe store use to be next to Everyday Fashion. He has put in his time, made his contribution and now move on, paving the way for a younger person to fill the gap. I wish you well
