Rotary Club of Central Tortola plants 'Peace Poles' @ Pier Park
According to Rotary International, a Peace Pole is a monument that displays the message ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth’ in the language of the country where it is placed and usually displays three to seven additional languages meaningful to the host site. This began in 1949.
The message is referred to as an affirmation of peace and its placement furthers Rotary's goal of building a culture of peace throughout the world. The term was authored by late Masahisa Goi of Japan after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945 respectively.
Peace Poles dedicated by District 7020 Governor
Among those in attendance at the ceremony was District 7020 Governor Bazin who expressed her happiness that the club had taken the step to plant Peace Poles. She had the honour of dedicating the Peace Poles yesterday.
Past District Governor of the Rotary Club Vance M. Lewis said the planting of the Peace Poles show the public how important peace is to the club.
“The importance of the Peace Poles “cannot be underestimated,” he added.
Assistant District Governor Rosemarie Flax said in August she emphasised the importance of planting Peace Poles. “I am very happy. I am overjoyed to see that two Peace Poles have been planted by Central...I am so happy that we are one of the countries that is planting Peace Poles,” she said.
Other Rotary clubs in the Virgin Islands have also been planting Peace Poles.
Over two hundred and fifty thousand Peace Poles have been planted and one hundred and eighty countries have taken on the mission to plant Peace Poles.
