LOS ANGELES, California, USA- “This is going to show every youth in the Virgin Islands, every youth in the Caribbean – small islands especially – that we could dream bigger than we ever thought we could.”

That was Theron Thomas, 2024 Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical), reacting on Sunday night, February 4, 2024, to his big win at the 66th annual Grammy Awards. With several massive hits under his belt this year, including “Pretty Girls Walk”, the viral track performed by Big Boss Vette, “Told Ya”, with Chlöe & Missy Elliot, and Tyla’s “Been Thinking” among others, Grammy judges gave Mr Thomas the nod over several other heavy-hitters in his category.

'Grateful to be mentioned amongst greatness'- Thomas

Last year, Mr Thomas, who has roots in the [British] Virgin Islands, was recognised for his work on Lizzo’s 2023 Record of the Year “About Damn Time.”

“I’m grateful that my name has been mentioned amongst greatness,” Mr Thomas said, referring to the other nominated writers, including Justin Trantor. However, being associated with greatness is not new for the Virgin Islander. His list of writing credits include work performed by Rihanna, Beyonce, Ciara Victoria Monét, Lloyd, and K-Pop sensation Jung Kook, among many others.

That greatness exists in abundance in the territory, Mr Thomas believes. While he says there’s more work to do in terms of making a name for the Virgin Islands musically speaking and across the Caribbean, he commended local talent including Adam O, Pumpa, Pressure Buss Pipe, Monea (BVI) and others, for being the vanguard in this arena.

Mr Thomas said that when he began his musical career, he never envisioned his work receiving accolades on the global stage. “I just wanted to take care of my daughter and get my parents out of the projects, you know?” However, he has graciously accepted his position as a role model for younger Virgin Islanders. “I want to set an example of truth and realistic goals,” he told the Consortium in an exclusive interview.

'Learn from mistakes'

Being realistic means that “you don’t have to walk this perfect line that the world tells you,” Mr Thomas advised young Virgin Islanders striving for greatness. “Make as many mistakes as you can, learn from them and get better from them.”

Above all else, Mr Thomas says, “do everything you do with love.”

Department of Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte lauded Mr Thomas for his enduring discipline that has led to such a pinnacle recognition. "It is with great pride that we congratulate our very own Theron Thomas. From an island paradise of just 32 square miles, he has gone on to receive the highest accolade in your field, adding to your ongoing amplification of Virgin Islands excellence. Naturally in Rhythm is not just a tagline, it’s our people and we thank you for sharing it with the world," he said in a statement provided to the Consortium.

Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr, too, praised the recording artist and songwriter, expressing immense pride in the accomplishment. "On behalf of the entire US Virgin Islands I want to congratulate Theron Thomas on today’s historic Grammy win. I stand with the entire territory in expressing immense joy as a native son takes center stage on the music industry’s biggest stage," Mr Bryan said.

What is admirable is that Mr. Thomas has not forgotten his roots. Money and fame should not change us, or make us forget to bring those we left behind along with us, by making a path that they can follow.

Congratulations to this young man. I love and admire him. With all the "greats" he rubs shoulders with, he remains humble and down to earth. I wish him all the best for the future. Continue to make your immediate family and these Virgin Islands (both sets) proud.

  • So it was ok to cuss for culture? (05/02/2024, 18:27) Like (10) Dislike (4) Reply
Its interesting how everyone is afraid to speak the disgust of the cuss words at the end. You are all proud of this filth. It is moy my culture to cuss nobody mother at no cost and at no award or fame. Had he tell any of you this to your faces you would have felt disrespected. But a grammy award seem to overstep all morals because of who it is. When your children tell this to their teacher, please hand them an award too and do not complain about it.

I dare to be different. I don't care who he is.

True, that was out of place with the cuss word. There's a place and time for everything. Around kids and families watching, that was no place for cuss word. Keep that in your group or the people you hang with. I wonder if he say that word in front of his kids. Or if his kids say that word in front of he. Culture what??
Back in the day, men dare never cuss in front of kids and women. Respect was given. Now when it come to cuss words, even babies and all cussing from their mother's womb.

I agree with the 2 previous comments. Wrong is right depending on who does it. What if the student go Charlotte Amalie High and lay out the principal and teachers with some mother this and dat. Will they invite him as the motivational sneaker? People will congratulate disrespect for fear od being called out. Yes big up his ather, rest his soul and all who there for him along the way, but the obscene language was not needed

I knew he's was a girl from the beginning. Once you get that devil status your plugged to the devil. Ask how many local artists you know if it's easy or hard to get to where these people are. Look at Iyaz he knows exactly what I am talking about. He's in America for over a decade and still no where. People all over the world should know him by now
