Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust launched
Dr Robert A. Mathavious, OBE, the late founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
Kidney Disease
The Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust is dedicated to improving lives in the Virgin Islands (VI) by supporting the relief, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease.
It was revealed at the launch that the late Dr Mathavious suffered with kidney disease for several years, although his positive attitude towards life and his responsibilities towards the financial services industry would have made many unsuspecting.
According to the Trust, its mission honours the legacy of Dr. Robert A. Mathavious OBE, LLD by creating lasting impact where it matters most, our community’s health and wellbeing.
The Trust, it said, reflects Dr Mathavious’s enduring spirit of service by addressing one of the Virgin Islands’ most pressing health challenges, kidney disease.
It was noted that kidney disease affects families across the Virgin Islands, often requiring long-term treatment, dialysis, or transplantation. Many patients face high costs, limited access to care, and emotional strain.
Purpose of Trust
Donation to the Trust will help fund life-saving dialysis and transplant procedures; Provide financial support for medication, equipment, and transportation; Expand community education and prevention programs to reduce new cases; Support research and innovation to improve treatment and outcomes; and Strengthen the VI’s medical infrastructure with modern equipment and facilities.
Donations may be made by cheque or wire transfer, payable to ATU General Trust (BVI) Limited as Trustees of the Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust.
Among those at the launch of the Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust were Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), Junior Minister for Financial services and Economic Development Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL), and Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith, along with relatives of the late Dr Mathavious.
FSC Robert A. Mathavious Scholarship Grant
Earlier this year, the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC) launched the FSC Robert A. Mathavious Scholarship Grant, which is designed to invest in the people who will help shape the future of the Virgin Islands’ (VI) financial services industry.
The grant is funded by the Commission and will provide financial assistance to three successful applicants each year. With the grant, they will pursue short courses and professional development programmes through H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services (RMI).
Meanwhile, the Robert A. Mathavious Memorial Trust is now another fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by service to the Virgin Islands.
