ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has said that while the funds are available for roadworks territory-wide, there is a process and work will be amped up in the second or third quarter of 2025.

Speaking via phone on the Virgin Islands Voice on April 16, 2025, Hon Rymer, who is out of state, gave an overview of roadworks.

The Ministry of Communications and Works embarked on a vigorous approach to deal with the road network in 2024, with some projects already completed.

“A lot is happening behind the scenes with the funds from the [$100 million] loan…and a sizeable chunk is for the road infrastructure, and I’m quite happy about that.”

Ministry & PWD working on comprehensive upgrades- Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer said that since the budget was passed in the House of Assembly and the funds made available, teams comprising individuals from the Ministry of Communications and Works and the Public Works Department (PWD) have been engaged to complete “comprehensive upgrades”.

Some of the roads on the cards for upgrades are the McNamara to Wailing Road, Havers, roads in Anegada, Jost van Dyke and Virgin Gorda, among many others.

“I just want the public to know, yes, we have the funds, [but] we just can’t assign a company to go and do the roads,” Hon Rymer said, explaining, “We have to get the engineering done, we have to go and do our assessment.”

Hon Rymer said some projects also need Cabinet's approval.

The team is also engaged from beginning to end with engineering, design and the supervision of roadworks.

“The engineer would work with whoever the company is to make sure the roadworks are being carried out, and that actually takes some time.”

The Minister assured residents that a lot more roadworks will be seen by the second or third quarter of the year.

Beg for more patience- Hon Rymer

Roadworks are also being done through the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) in the Fort Hill area, among others.

Hon Rymer explained as it relates to roadworks in Anegada, contractors need to be re-engaged for the works to start, as these contracts already existed.

Work in Sea Cows Bay and Virgin Gorda will continue as preliminary works need to be done, he added.

The minister begged patience from residents as the roadworks continue in the Territory.

We’ll start laying asphalt, over roads that were in a 90% better condition than many of the pot hole ridden suspension wrecking tracks you appear to be ignoring.

The new section of road past the old fat Hog Bobs seems to be now designed considerably more narrow and therefore dangerous or is that my imagination?

I think this is because of the conflict with Chalwell. If you realise, they left provisions for a side walk (I’m assuming Challwell doesn’t want them using it).

      So long for BVI Pride.

just a question to the politician responsible for road repairs throughout this territory; why cant road works be done 2/3 o’clock in the morning as a posed to disrupting the regular flow of traffic

but much thanks for fixing the public road way

If I can recall, a contract was awarded to fix that entire SCB area, like how a contract was awarded to fix between Hodge’s Creek to Paraquita Bay.

    1. 90% of the roads that got new asphalt over the last 3 months weren’t in bad condition to justify repaving.

    2. Under that one minister you have roads being paved today and Water and sewerage digging them up tomorrow to fix problems that been there for years.

    3. They obviously have no proper plan in place because how they gone from east to town and leave areas in between that need urgent attention ?

    4. The private company they hired aint doing as good of a job as PWD. Some of the areas they recently paved feel and look horrible. Especially Jose hill

    5. The road from pari to fat hogs bay is too narrow, change in elevation makes no sense and why we still putting manholes in the middle of the road in 2025 ?

    6. Raising the road 2-3” and leaving out the sections over manhole and other access is a hazard.

So the whole thing shows that we have a high level of incompetence in positions making decisions on our behalf.
