ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The flora and palm trees that were planted around Road Town during 2011 by former Fourth District Representative Hon. Vincent Scatliffe's beautification efforts seems to be abandoned with concerns raised by some members of the public as to whose responsibility it was to take care of them.

Weeds have been overgrowing around the plants, some already dying from lack of water while others have already disappeared. The areas include those that are in the vicinity of the High Court, in the area of the House of Assembly building and in the vicinity of the bandstand.

The question is, with the former representative out of office, should the plants which are part of the beautification efforts for Road Town be abandoned or will someone take on the mantle to continue taking care of them?

Virgin Islands News Online caught up with the former Representative Dr. Scatliffe who said, “I am very regrettable that the project is not being continued and that it is neglected.”

When asked about his opinion towards current Representative Hon. Mark Vanterpool, in regards to the project, Dr. Scatliffe declined to respond.

The beautification of Road Town project fostered by Dr. Scatliffe during his service as Representative of the District was financed by the District Allocation Budget.

Meanwhile, when contacted about the project, Minister Vanterpool refused to address the topic, stating “I don’t know about the project”.

These things were overgrown before elections. it was a stupid idea just to give a new landscape company a contract. the sensible thing to do is to give the same company a contract to maintain them but who cares as long as it look like do little did something. lets be fair. the question should be what did do little put in place in terms of maintenance. if they had something in place theyw ouldn't have been half dead way before november elections.

Alyo ain't hear the government ain't got no money. How about all of you who want to see Tortola beautified get up and go help to maintain what was planted. That project is at the bottom of the list. The government dealing with the important things first.

This is such a shame that after all that money was spent on this project it is now being neglected. I think that we in the BVI should have more national pride and at least volunteer at least once a month to help keep these area in top shape if we see that govt is not doing what they are suppose to do. Mr. Scatliffe since you are the one who started these beautification projects, maybe you can be instrumental in getting volunteers together. This should be look at as giving back to our country. Please don't stop or be discourage because you are no longer in office. It our civic duty to make sure that our islands stay in tip top shape. It puzzles me to know that we spend millions trying to attract visitors to our shores. On the other hand, we are not taking care of our tourist product. It is always the mind set here in the BVI that if I am not getting paid, I am not doing anything for free because it doesn't belong to me. On the contrary it belongs to all of us. What about national pride. To Mr. Vanterpool not because you did not start the beautification project, you should neglect the project. It's in you district and you should show more pride in maintaining the area.

Those things were dead before election what f'ery you guys talking about neglect? Before we went to the polls a few months ago those things were pure dead flowers and weeds stop the madness. what you expect govt to do with dead flowers? In due time I'm sure it will be fixed properly. If Mark started on those you would say he has better things to do than plant flowers, good old trick but nobody with sense falling for it. Mark tackled what Vincent didnt, who the hell puts nice flowers around runnning sewerage and a garbage dump? Not 6mths in good and town cleaning up and sewerage being worked on. WATER THAT!

@ Realtalk That's the mentality that is so prevelant here in the BVI. Because it is flowers we tend to think that it's a worthless project. My friend we marketing ourselves as a tourist destination and according to the politicians a high end one at that. If this is suppose to be a high end destination we need to treat it as such not just in talk. and that's realtalk. That would entail beautifying all common areas in our town area. And yes that's with flowers and nice shaddy trees along with palms. I for one don't like visiting any place where it's only the resort areas that are well kept and all over the rest of country it look unkept like a garbage dump. Man take pride in our country and stop involving the politrix in everything.

Boss, I don't disagree that the country should be well kept but sewerage comes before flowers. That is my point. They were just elected, the flowers were dead before election, I'm not bringing politics to anything, I'm stating facts. People are blaming the government for the dead flowers. If Mark started working on them they would ask why he busy planting flowers and this and that need to be fixed. He's not a machine, the idiots before left the country broke but nobody say nothing cuz they were getting their little hand out here and there. Now they want you make a dollar out of 50 cents. We will get there, don't worry bout it! Scatto plant flowers before addressing sewerage and cleaning up the old cars and junk from around the place. The place looks so much different now in just a few months. What about when VIP left the QE extension to overgrow with weeds despite meeting a nice fence in the area? Where was the investigative report on that? Where was the report on how prospect was left to rot? where is the report about manse road only being started on weeks before election despite them meeting things in place? Ya'll to onesided and can only talk about politics when you are on the losing end of the argument. Before the year is out our City will rival any other in the Caribbean, remember i say so!

You are right on point. When I see the kind of comments people put out there it makes me wonder. You raised a valid point. Why put our energies and focus on some flowers and ignore the stench and the sewage problem that is so pervasive and that we have come to accept as a way f life? Beauty is not just what the eye sees, in this case fixing the sewage problem and eliminating the foul odor is far more important. What's the point of seeing "beautiful flowers" when you can't smell them because of the malodorous atmosphere in and around the city? We are talking disease people. The sewage problem contributes to our health problems. You political lackeys out there trying to create confusion and divert attention away from the real issues need to take a second look. Did anyone notice that many of he roads are being repaired even though there is little or no money? Has anyone looked around and noticed that there is a real plan to fix the country's problems? No attempt to berate Mark Vanterpool or any of the other Ministers or Representatives will succeed because they are on the job. They are not just running around attending to "special interests." What the former government failed to do with more the present government is tackling with less. The former Minister of Communication and Works has only one thing to show for his last four years in office; Bi-Water. For a government that has been in office for less than eight months we must admit that they are on the right track and are dealing with our problem systematically; not in the arbitrary disjointed manner of the former government. This fact must be recognized irrespective of which side one is on so let us be brutally honest and stop blowing smoke. Does anyone want to talk about the company that was paid (millions of dollars) several times for the same projects that to date are still incomplete? I guess not based on who we are affiliated with.

My question is why can't all of these things that you speak about be done simultaneoulsy. Are we so limited that we can only complete or concentrate on one task at a time. The beautification is already there whether it was place there in advance of more pressing issues it should be cared for because it's our tax money that was used to put it there. In addition, it enhances the character of the town. Man we need to treat this place with pride and not as a competition between the politician. I did that he did that and so on. If we truly love this country this will happen regardless to who is in office.
