PASEA ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Whether the price is right at Riteway and customers are happy is another story but the staff of Riteway are not happy, as they have had much to complain about.

One of the issues that have upset staff of the supermarket chain is the recent letter by management informing staff that effective May 1, 2024, they are to submit their bags for inspection by security upon exiting buildings, stores and warehouses.

Another issue is a pay raise that has not appeared to have made staff any more satisfied.

Security check/inspection of staff

It was on April 10, 2024, that a letter to staff by Riteway’s Loss Prevention and Security Manager notified staff of the security check policy being enforced.

According to the email seen by our News Centre, employees undergoing regular random checks/inspections has always been a part of the company's policy but somehow was never enforced.

“Staff are observed exiting buildings/stores/warehouses etc, carrying their personal bags with them, without any inspections carried out upon them/their bags. This has prompted the Loss Prevention/Security/Manager to revisit the policy set and get back to the basics by reintroducing the procedure(s).”

According to the email, “Not everyone will be happy as this was never a part of an everyday practice. It is nothing personal guys...”

The email also made it clear that an employee “should NOT refuse” a security check/inspection upon request.

According to the Security Policy of Riteway, at the discretion of Management and/or the Head of Security, Security personnel may conduct random searches from time to time or if there exists a valid, work-related reason for the search. Any employee may be subject to a search of their personal belongings while on duty or upon leaving any RTW controlled location. The Company reserves this right in order to monitor compliance with rules concerning the safety of employees, security of company property, drugs and alcohol, and possession of other prohibited items.

The policy also states that an employee who refuses to submit to a search request by the Company may face disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, the matter has also caught the attention of the Minister for Labour, Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE, who said on a local radio station that she has already reached out to the management of Riteway and it has agreed with her that the letter on the security matter was not appropriate.

Pay raise fails to satisfy staff

Meanwhile, Riteway staff have been complaining about a recent raise given to employees.

According to one of the staff members who spoke to our News Centre on condition of anonymity, the pay raise included $0.13, $0.25, and $0.27 per hour.

“The cost of living has increased and a certain percentage of the British Virgin Islands live off of minimum wage which makes it impossible to live comfortably,” a staff member of Riteway stated.

Up to time of publication, Riteway had not responded to our request for comment.

Riteway, a chain of supermarkets, was sold by its founder, the later Peter Haycraft, to The North West Company Inc, in 2016. North West is a Canadian-based public retailer that specialises in serving smaller countries and regions.

The territory has become lawless where the supermarket workers(not just Riteway) conspire together to steal from the same place they are employed cause they have to keep up with the latest fashion trend or are just simply greedy.
Also, the quality of goods from these supermarkets are way below average and sometimes most of the stuff are EXPIRED!

Theft is a common practice worldwide in almost, if not all business. For example: Overcharge of goods is theft. Underpaid of workers also are. Not working for your agreed pay is theft. Lying that one is sick to get time from work, then get time off is theft, and list continues.

RiteWay Food Market Company has the right right to protect their invested interest, but $0.13, $0.25 and $0.27 raise according to the Topic Issue, and the compulsory search of all staff workers, seem to excessive
    .
There are business owners know that the salary paid to most of their employees are unfair. Those Companies owners have fear in their mind, and sometimes justifiable so, that a total of all their staff will solve the theft problem, but it will not. A live and let live will, not a disrespectful search.
"Do until others as you would have them do until you". In spite of the theft and other opinions that we favor, problems of this type and others will continue, because human by nature is a greedy minded creature. Colour of skin, place of birth, gender, religion, education and others philosophical difference have nothing to do with it. People are greedy by nature.

Notice though, the said Company's name is RITEWAY, not the right way. I hope that a fair settlement will be reached by RITEWAY and staff workers on this matter, speedily and fair

Sue you seh? The good lawyers of the BVI would take your money to represent you in the non existent case you don't have. probable cause. n. sufficient reason based upon known facts to believe a crime has been committed or that certain property is connected with a crime. I swear not so smart people just say things they hear that sound good but have no idea what it means. Riteway have all the probable cause as their goods are walking out the door unaccounted for. HELLO. It's in their company policy which the employees signed to as part of their agreement. Larger international retail companies do this all over. NNEEEXXXXTTTTT!!!!!!! BVI just want to be lawless as usual. That's why some can't leave and go nowhere. They don't want to follow rules HMMM!!!!!!!!

Live according to your means stop taking the people things and taking home to share up among your friends people talk.

I am wondering where Fairness for (All) stands, Employer & Employees at RiteWay as it relates to such two-fold developments . Having read all the comments , and the fact that workers aren't a campers: I purchased a book entitled " Human Resource Workplace Fairness In The British Virgin Islands Retail Sector" from Island Services adjacent RiteWay Supermarket. This book I am convinced have some answers to many questions, and numerous solutions to Cooperate-B.V.I..RiteWay Food Market should invest in this book: its certainly an intellectual-property.

We haven't had a good and strong labour minister that stand up to big companies on behalf of the employees as far back as I can remember. Everytime we vote hopi g to get better we get the worst. People's personal possessions are only subject to search upon reasonable suspicion by security, and they must be asked and be consented to. If no consent is given the the security cannot force search, they have to seek the police assistance.. This is nothing but intimidation and oppression using the sledge hammer.

Why you guys want to be so difficult, If you have nothing to hide just show your bag, or better yet use a small handbag that holds your keys and wallet, for those that drive no need for a bag, lock your stuff in your vehicle, simple. I work where bags get search going in and coming out of work, so i don't walk with a big bag. They are rite to protect there stuff, if you don't want to abide get another job simple.

@ Weak Labour minister. You are the only one thus far make sense with this comment. Rite Way cannot search my personal property if I don’t give consent, they will call a police have me investigate. This every one can win a case against their employer. The Right to privacy is crush when we allow companies in BVI to do what write way is trying to do. Random arrest by a supermarket security is not a law. Staff should ensure they know their human rights and stick with it. I stop shopping there it’s unfair to those staff. That place have cameras, use it to stick it those those who trouble your stuff.

It's in a policy that they signed to adhere to in order to work for them. That is consent. People sign for a job but they ain't reading JACK. Read the fine print. With that signed document, they can search because consent already given. It's people like you with false information giving people false hope. When people follow your advice they'll be jobless and where will you be?

Nonsense, what that head of security needs to do is put more cameras in place, do their job and monitor them. Even if you have to hire someone just for camera works. You can't search ppl personal bags unless you have evidence of them picking up and not paying for the goods.

In order to search someone ,you must have reasonable grounds or suspicion to do so. If not you are in total violation of the person constitutional rights." Rights to privacy ". This show off security manager wants please management so he can get a couple dollars but he will help them as well to get some lawsuits.

Nobody thieving. They need to stop the rumors and painting black people as thieved. People in Receiving dept are not doing their Jobs properly. They are not checking thorouvhly what they received so when tbey suppose to receive 100 of something they tick one hundred as ok, so the system register that but in fact its only 85 arrived, this happen for a lot of itwms, also things are received under wrong codes and put in the system under wrong codes, example the company ordered 100 cs of sardine in water, the company sent 50 cs of water and 50 cs of oil, the receiver received 50 cs of water and 50 cs of oil but the changes ain made in the system to indicate that only 50cs sardine in water arrived, so when the system is asking for 200cs only 50 is available..No one is stealing, they need to stop. The problem they have is between the purchasing dept, the receivers and the suppliers, to add, the inventory is meant to correct all of this, but when the inventory shows up shortages they quick to blame workers. Also That Man in Acc dept. Who thinks bad a bout blacks and believe blacks are thieves and and brain washing the owners, RTW got good hard working workers that keep the company strong. The Issue are those in the Office who not doing their jobs properly. .Everyone in RTW know who write this. I know the system well. I rep and defend the staff from these allegations and been used as scape goat and finding reasons not to pay them properly. That straight hair man in accounts is the main Problem at RTW. Labour needs to Investigate go talk to the staff at the whole sale one by one..Seek the truth.

And do unto others as you would like others do unto you. Set of thieves. You are unhappy with your pay and search simple get another job or open your own.

'Shrinkage' is huge in retail and firms need policies in place. However paying staff a living wage, treating them fairly and being good corporate citizens would make more of a difference. At $8 an hour i'm leaving with anything that wont be noticed.

Know the facts about RTW you are so true. While there are rotten eggs in every ethnicity, they seem to always point a finger at the blacks in Riteway. Then it creates an opportunity for him to fill the place with his kind. Numerous times he has made comments about black people always stealing. He needs to go back to the Phillipines where there are no blacks to steal. But who isn't held accountable for products in that company are those in power. Cause in reality, who checking them? When you want to now check my personal bag it becomes and issue, and my vehicle? Naw, something is up and they're trying to pin it on the small man. I can smell a rat.

The letter did not say search it said bag inspection nothing to hide nothing to worry about. Some business place don't even allow personal bags in business area. straight locker rooms that are monitored.
