WEST END, Tortola, VI- A joint operation against illegal motor scooters on Monday, May 8, 2023, resulted in nine motor scooters seized by police on Tortola, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has reported.

It said the Road Policing Unit merged with officers of other units over the weekend to disrupt the practice by scooter riding groups to form noisy, illegal motorcades, particularly on the western end of the island, and disturb residents.

“In Monday’s operation, one of the larger groups was blocked in the Ballast Bay area; the riders then abandoned their scooters on private properties in the area and ran.

“A total of nine scooters were confiscated and are now in police custody. One of the riders was detained after sustaining injuries in his attempt to flee, the RVIPF stated in a press release today, May 10, 2023.

Public partnership ‘greatly assisted’- Inspector Karen Vanterpool

Head of the Road Policing Unit Inspector Karen Vanterpool says the public’s partnership greatly assisted in the success of this operation. “While noise complaints from the public are helpful, the active participation by members of the public is what led to the success of this operation. Similar operations will be carried out in the coming weeks,” she said.

With investigations ongoing in connection to the seized scooters, the Inspector noted that owners with requisite proof of ownership, licence and insurance are invited to come to the Road Town Police Station on Fridays only between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Tortola and VG residents have endured the plague of noisy dangerous motorcycles and scooters on the public roads since Hurricane Irma. The time has come to ban ALL of them from the BVI.

U guys worry about the least. Everywhere else in the world has the bigger bikes legal which mean there is a lot more noise and they never complain like you guys on here, just like a set off cry babies.Maybe if the government do legalize the bigger engines and build track and a park where they can do stunt there will be less accidents and less crime as well like that they will be able to do what they love legally.

@nonsense, the bigger bikes noise is a lot different, the bigger bikes don’t remove their baffles the riders in most places have more respect for the law and would be charge if they were to do the same thing these riders are doing in the BVI. The problem is the police don’t inforce the law as they should, what they now and then they should do every day.

Ayo ms worrying about the wrong set of things. Yall constantly want police after these riders. Aint until its one of your family members being chase youll understand what the police do just to take a bike. The commissioner already said they're not suppose to give chase yet they do. They try cut off the bike or literally hit them off but they won't tell u that part. Vehicle have modified exhaust and I don't hear a soul complaining about the noise from it. Yall just like to be in ting and complain over petty vybes. When ayo send police after these young men hope one of the riders are you family member and he get lick off!!
