ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Persons in the Virgin Islands (VI) are being called to ‘retire their rides’ as the Virgin Islands (VI) Department of Waste Management launches its derelict removal campaign.

These calls came from the Director Mr Marcus E. Solomon who added, “Over the next couple weeks we want the residents of Virgin Gorda as well as Tortola to retire their derelict rides as well as help us to identify derelicts throughout the community,” he said.

Mr Solomon in a release from Government Information Service (GIS) said the aim is to get as many derelicts off the street by September 15 to facilitate export on September 18, 2023.

“Together it is our responsibility to keep our community clean and green, but everyone needs to do their part. We are asking you to help us help the community,” the director said.

Barge coming on September 18, 2023

He added, “We have the barge coming in on the 18 and it is our goal to get as many derelicts and scrap metal off of the island.”

The community is also being urged to identify derelicts on private and public property and contact the department at 494-4934 or via the BVIGovReportit app.

Persons are also being advised to record location information and submit to the department or via the app accompanied with a photo where applicable.

When the report is received, an officer will travel to the location, identify the vehicle(s) and issue a notice appropriate to the location.

please go in the entrance at the area called drunk yard.my gosh I have never seen more abandoned vehicles than in that area. You would think with all the nice houses in that area that the people responsible for having so many scrap vehicles would remove them so the area can look better. it seems that it's two families responsible for the many scrap vehicles in that area.i drove up there twice in recent times and you would think is Afghanistan or a war zone you driving through. take a look for yourself and tell me if I am speaking the truth.

Love this, thank you new Director Solomon. Please come through Baughers Bay. Abandoned vehicles everywhere contributing to mosquitoes and giving the place a run down look. Hon Walwyn make it happen for us please.

How much the government getting from export of scrap metal?why don't the government have employees source all the scrap metal from packwood pond rather than burying it in the soil and looking for vehicles on the road! The government always looking for easy access out.

Mr. Solomon, you might be overwhelmed with so many vehicles that will be reported now. I myself know so many it will make your head spin. @great who wrote about the place they call the junkyard on private property, they are telling the truth. This family is well known and I can't believe the people who live in these nice houses who are not family, just to get to the top of their hill have to drive through this eyesore, have not complained to get them removed for over 20 years now. This is a disgrace to the entire BVI. I could not live in that area without complaining so many years ago. Now I bet the calls will start the cleanup of this nasty place.

That junkyard in East End in Fat Hogs Bay is the worst in the BVI. This family refuses to clean up their property. I am stunned at how long this has been allowed and they have government jobs too. SMDH!

You know why they have old vehicles is because they are getting robb or there salary and spend it in supermarket to survive the heavy cost of living in the VI.

Maybe the new corporation tax of 15% for IBs can pay for a real bvi clean up. It's a shame that the place look the way it does

I suggest DWM partner with the RVIPD traffic division to get those unlicenced and uninsured vehicles off the Government's public access roads as well. Just taking up vehicle off of private properties does not remedy the issues of road safety and traffic congestion . Look at the bigger picture , those individuals that have their vehicles blocking traffic and make two lane roads one lane roads needs to be corrected. DMW, stop the feather and flesh approach and address the real issue!

The only thing that will stop this behaviour (and other bad behaviour on our roads) and these cheap Japanese imports is proper enforcement of the laws and increased punishment.
