BRADY GHUT, Tortola, VI- Rainfall from the passage of Tropical Storm Earl over the weekend reportedly caused a retaining wall to collapse at a private residence at Brady Ghut, on the eastern end of Tortola.

The wall collapsed onto a road, which was left blocked for some time.

A utility pole fell as a result of the wall coming down and an SUV also nearly tumbled onto the road.

No one was reportedly hurt.

Poorly constructed wall?

Meanwhile, the owner of the property where the wall fell, Mr James Pickering aka 'Deadman', said the wall was constructed by Public Works Department (PWD) over 10 years ago.

Mr Pickering also suggested the wall was poorly constructed.

I really don't see any steel either. We need to have professionals erect the appropriate structural walls and not take short cuts. Doing this can easily cause loss of life. THE WEATHER HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. If it were grounded with the proper steel work this would not have happened. I hope the residential building is not built like the wall cause we are going have some trouble. IRRESPONSIBLE BUILDERS, not fair to do this at all. DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT THE/YOUR TENANTS LIVES????

Let's be fair. If this was just a privacy wall there would be no need for steel. If this was a retaining wall, then there needed to be steel and also enough holes in the wall for the water to flow out and not put pressure on the wall. No one knows except the builders what happened, so let us wait and see. Thank goodness no one was hurt.

That wall looks like it don't have an ounce of steel. BVI needs to start fining contractors if any foolishness is discovered down the road...

for your information, contractors build what they are paid to build. Owner just want a block wall, they get a block wall. They say the cost of rebars and to put them in carry up the cost too much, which means more labour, more material and extra time. They want a $500.00 wall and they get what they pay for., They take their money and buy a more luxurious vehicle instead of putting it in the wall, and so the wall take the vehicle with it. Too many persons around here want a million dollar job for a hundred dollars. People who don't know wha going on behind the scene, sit down to their phone and chat crap

@ to guest. A Contractor knows a retaining wall needs the necessary materials to build that wall, whether the owner wants to save money or not. The Contractor knows the dangers that will occur and should not accept any job that might put people's lives at risk because it will fall squarely on his shoulders as being incompetent. I can see on a flat surface where a retaining wall is not necessary but the owner just wants privacy, that is o.k., but a retaining wall should never be compromised. Whose heads will roll because of this?

remember a contractor these days is anybody and everybody. A set of people walking around the island and once they can hold a hammer, nobody to check if they know how to even read a tape measure, This is a different day. I have seen where people will leave the contractor and pull his workmen on the side for a night job just to pay less. Take a ladder and climb alot of rebuilt roofs around the place and you see what really went on.

That’s exactly what you’re doing. You don’t know how that wall got there

Don’t see any steel nor proper drainage holes throughout the wall to release the pressure from the water. Common sense isn’t so common.

Happy no one was hurt. Sorry for the home owner who was cheated by the contractor maybe. I don't see any rebar in the rubble. Maybe the soil was too weak all around.

That wall was undermined due to the owner having their soak-away water running down towards the retaining wall below built by the government many years ago. THAT IS THE CAUSE!!

that's what we get for picking up all kind of people who will charge little to nothing for construction. The cost of cheap is sometimes high. In this case it could have cost a life. How it look when you got to pay to learn

That wall was built by Dr Pickering and Real Frett after they took some of the land owners land to widen the road going pass there. The road is still good but the wall isn’t. Not a fair exchange.
