Resident bemoans unfulfilled promises by gov’t

The resident was at the time a caller on the Speak Out BVI radio show aired on August 28, 2013. "At the end of the day, they shouldn’t become Minister if I can’t tell the difference with you,” he stated.
Co-host on the programme, Natalio Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru, who was himself a former political candidate, agreed with the caller and reflected on a promise made by the current National Democratic Party (NDP) administration to “get to the bottom” of the current fuel surcharge attached to electricity bills.
“I could remember members of the now governing party speaking about getting to the bottom of this whole fuel variation surcharge, ‘when we get in we’re going to get to the bottom of that’,” Wheatley said.
He noted that this remains a part of the bill today and until now “we haven’t gotten to the bottom of it” but said the governing party still has two more years to do so.
The commentator also recalled the NDP stating that the Beef Island project wouldn’t be done if the people didn’t want it, “then during their governance we’re hearing talks about getting the Beef Island project going again”.
“Representatives of government, then candidates, were speaking about all the businesses the guys on the block were going to start once they get in,” he claimed, “they go in an you’re just seeing the same bush cutting and sweeping of the road.”
Wheatley reasoned that it was not a good thing to make promises to simply get elected but he felt that it may have also been a case where it was genuinely felt that the party could get some of these things accomplished.
“But you have to be very cautious and careful what you say because you don’t know what the situation is when you get on the inside…” he added.
He also remarked about the promise to stop the BiWater contract only for the government to get in power and realise that this couldn’t be done.
“You have to be very cautious and responsible when you’re campaigning and also the electorate has to be responsible and mature as well and not just expect a bunch of promises,” he advised.
Mr Wheatley urged that persons look at policies, principles, knowledge, experience and character of the candidates and determine whether these measure up with those of the voters.
