Acclaimed Barbadian biologist, Professor Juliet Daniel, one of Canada’s top innovators in research and medicine and whose discovery and naming of the “kaiso” gene boosted global understanding of cancer, especially breast cancer, has passed away.

She died on April 28, 2026, in a hospital in Canada around 1:30 p.m. after being flown there from Barbados recently to undergo further medical treatment.

Daniel revealed in a February 2019 Sunday Sun interview that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer ten years earlier, and had lost her mum to the disease.

The former student of Queen’s College who hailed from Culloden Road, St Michael, later rose to academic and scientific heights as an influential cancer biologist, researcher and professor at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. She established her own independent research laboratory in the Department of Biology, where she discovered the new gene, which became a major scientific element in genetics.

So sorry to hear that .It was probably the stress of seeing her own mother suffer that added to her own algo with the inherited factors. So sad I hope they honor her with the naming of a wing of the hospital or the Cancer society or another institution worthy of her name .RIP angel.
