PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – When Renardis ‘Aukie’ Donovan was awarded the Farmer of the Year trophy at the opening ceremony of Farmers’ Week (FW) 2015 on January 30, 2015 he told this news site that claiming such a win was nothing strange to him despite the fact that at no point he thought that he was going to be so awarded this year.

According to the farmer he has not been able to do farming as usual for quite some time as he has been constantly battling to secure land for such activities.

"I do almost everything, once it’s in the line of farming I do it, I fish, I do livestock farming, to plant cash and other crops, farming is just my thing. But I was out of the Farmers’ Week thing for some years because I wasn’t getting land to farm,” he told this news site.

He opted not to go into much details as to how he managed to finally get some lands that would have allowed him the opportunity to produce to the extent that he won the Farmer of the Year trophy but said that there is much more that he needs to do and that he is open to all the assistance he can get at this time.

He said that of the many challenges he faces the major one is that of adequate supply of water for farming. “That is the number one problem for me and that is the most important thing if a farmer is to really do farming,” he said.

He said also, “One thing I don’t agree with is these chemicals they use these days for growing and in farming in general, I really don’t like it and that’s why for all the years in farming I do it the old style, old fashion way.”
