DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – While calling for business owners to pay up severance to employees laid off as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) also urged businesses to be honest with their dealings.

The Labour Minister made the calls during a statement at the Sixth Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly on March 10th, 2021.

“There are not easy times, but I implore persons to remain considerate of the employees and employers remain honest in their dealings especially as it relates to owed severance,” he said.

Remain thankful for opportunities – Hon Wheatley

The statement came as the layoff extension period for both employees and employers officially ended on February 28, 2021, paving the way for backdated severance to be paid to employees who were not rehired.

“Remain sympathetic to the many situations created, remain thankful for all opportunities and remain safe during this time,” Hon Wheatley also urged both employees and employers.

Since the start of the Pandemic, the Fahie administration has been implementing measures to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on families and the economy. Measures include a business stimulus plan as well as a food programme in partnership with businesses and local NGO’s.

You need to be realistic. Should landlords end up losing their homes because you want to live rent-free?

Mr minister. Please let them know that servance pay dhould not be paid on there reduced covid salary. There are some unscrupulous managers who are doing just that. They unilaterally cut salary citing Covid-19. Then wait 6 months to the day to terminate long serving employees and calculate benefits on the reduced salary.
