Religious leaders get clarion call to speak out against Hon Walwyn
The clarion call was made by a man of the cloth himself, Honestly Speaking’s Claude O. Skelton Cline during his radio programme on September 25, 2018.
He was at the time discussing the local political climate with guests, Dr Karl Dawson and eminent businessman, Carvin Malone.
Skelton Cline in his appeal said, “we cannot sit on the sidelines and allow politicians from any group to divide the people who have lived and love together we must speak out from our pulpit…..say we are in this boat together.”
Dog Whistle Politics
Speaking to the coded language being employed by Hon Walywn, the radio host called it ‘dog whistle’ politics, saying the minister and his cohorts would rather destroy the VI, than to allow the people of the Territory, the right to chose their elected officials.
The hot button issue at the time was the eligibility of persons to be elected to office—a matter Skelton Cline said, was raised during the recent National Democratic Party (NDP) Congress where Hon Walwyn was elected Leader
According to Skelton Cline, it is the intention of some to divide and conquer in the VI.
He conceded there is a need for a review of the Constitutional provisions on eligibility saying, “yes, we have to come to legality of the matter, there is certainly a need for review to bring clarity.”
He was adamant however the matter should not be used to divide the people of the VI.
Protection
Mr Malone reminded the panel that during the last review of the VI Constitution which began in 2004 and came into force in 2007, the protection of indigenous Virgin Islanders to be elected to office was a matter that came under a specific term of reference.
On the immigration front, Mr Malone used the occasion to remind that it was the NDP government which increased the requirements for Belonger status and have in fact handed out more.
He reminded that that as the NDP announces a visa waiver for Chinese it was the same NDP that imposed visa restrictions for Haitians, Jamaicans and Guyanese and asked rhetorically, “where is the love.”
