ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The 2026 Winston Bolus National District Basketball League opened this past weekend with four games played over two nights.

The BVI Basketball Association (BVIBA) is on a mission to bring back structured basketball to the Virgin Islands (VI) and began with the league’s return on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. 

The league’s opening was attended by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7). According to a Facebook post from Premier Wheatley’s office, the weekend opening marked the “beginning of a season aimed at elevating coaching and opportunities for young athletes”. 

Saturday’s results

In the Junior Division game played Saturday, Skillful Ballers Club delivered a “dominant performance” over On A Mission with a 79-27 win. 

“Skillful Ballers Club showcased balanced scoring and defensive intensity throughout the contest,” BVIBA’s statement to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) added. 

Scoring for the winning team was led by Azani Frett (17 points), while Neshaun Frett contributed 14 points, 1 assist, 4 steals, and 3 blocks, and Azaniah Glasgow contributed 13 points, 5 assists, and 1 block.

For On A Mission, Caleb Stuart of Anegada finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block in what was described as “a determined effort”.

Relentless rip VG Elite

Meanwhile, in the Senior Division game, Relentless against VG Elite, it was Relentless who took the win 90-70. Shakeem  Blackmore, aka 'Veli', showed out with 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals; Devante Brewley added 16 points, knocking down four three-pointers, and Tavon J. Phillip contributed 13 points and 6 rebounds. 

VG Elite was led offensively by Shamarr A. George, who finished with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Stephano K. Paul also made his presence felt with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 steal.

Sunday’s results

On Game Day 2, Mt Zion Stars (D2) edged out Young Empire (D8) in the Junior Division 54-49. 

Zion Phillip dominated the contest with a massive double-double performance, recording 25 points, 19 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 4 steals. Michael Sue added 10 points, including 7 crucial fourth-quarter points that helped secure the win for Mt Zion Stars.

Young Empire was led by Jaleil Matthew, who finished with 15 points, 4 steals, and 3 rebounds. Ricco Bailey added 12 points and 2 steals, while Gary Gomez contributed 6 points, 5 steals, and 2 assists.

In the Senior Division game between Empire (D8) and Run It Up (D3), the latter team secured a 63-45 victory. 

Kymal Panchoo led the way with a dominant performance, recording 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jamal Serrante also played a key role in the win, finishing with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Empire showed resilience throughout the matchup and was led by Dreyonte Findlay, who finished with 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists in the losing effort.

The 2026 league was named in honour of the late Winston N. Bolus, who passed away in 2024, as a remembrance of his dedication as a beloved league commentator.
