SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – The mother of Clyde D. Lloyd Jr., Yvette Todman, as well as an aunt of the young man, have spoken out against the treatment they received at the hands of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) when they went there first to report the young man missing and then to inquire about arrangements for getting his body from St Thomas, USVI to Tortola after sadly learning of his possible demise at sea.

This news site has reported that Lloyd died possibly by drowning following an incident around February 14, 2016 when the United States Coast Guard carried out an operation aimed at combatting the smuggling of illegal aliens into the USVI.

According to Todman, to compare the treatment she received from the RVIPF versus that of the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) of the USVI is like comparing night to day.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) had reported that they had launched a probe into a missing man from Tortola following an incident around February 14, 2016 where the United States Coast Guard had conducted a major operation against alleged trafficking of illegal immigrants in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) waters.

It remains unclear if the deceased Lloyd fell off the boat or jumped, during the US Coast Guard Operations in the USVI waters.

Todman and her sister related to this news site their experience dealing with the RVIPF. They said that they had a lot of runaround from the RVIPF.

Todman went to first make a report on Wednesday February 17, 2016 stating that her son was missing.

She related that family members in St Thomas made contact with her and said she needed to get dental records for her son. She then returned to the Police and they told her that the Police in the USVI had to send “something to them” in order for the RVIPF to send the records.

Todman said that she had begun to hear news on the street since Tuesday February 16, 2016 that her son had died.

She said when they got to the station, the Police took a while to start attending to them.

“I wasn't getting anywhere, anywhere at all, [and I left] because I was vexed. But my sister remained,” she said.

The sister, who did not want her identity revealed, said that they eventually left the station as they were not getting anywhere.

The sister related that they went to St Thomas on Friday February 19, 2016, they were met by officers Freddy Perez and Mary Loby of the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) of the USVI who they said were courteous, helpful and professional throughout the process. According to both Todman and her sister, the officers of the VIPD went above and beyond the call of duty in making sure their questions were answered and provided all the information that they needed, even making suggestions on the best courses of action to take.

The body of Lloyd is still in St Thomas awaiting verification tests before it can be returned to the family on Tortola.

Contacted about the alleged behaviour of the members of the RVIPF, Police Information and Press Officer Diane Drayton promised to get back to this news site upon ascertaining what happened when the sisters visited the station to make their report.

BVI staff in customer service areas need a lot of training. Police are the ones with the worse attitude and never sets example and believe them is boss sh*t round here, they are not helpful and not confidential that's why they can't get no further with nothing at all. They need a lot of training. Nurses too the ones on OB ward mostly.

We complain about customer service and say that BVI people are rude but the truth is more than 50% of the RVIPF are from other Caribbean Islands. In the hospitality industry, leaving out Virgin Gorda, most of those working in the hotels are from the other Caribbean islands, supermarkets, restaurants, doctors office, lawyers office there are everywhere same thing. So which BVI staff are rude and unprofessional?
My point is when we complain that the people in the BVI service industry are this and that RVIPF, hotel and other service industry persons are rude and unprofessional.....they come from where they come from with their bad attitude and rude behaviour and bring it here!!!.

The comment of bad apple is what have the police acting like making decitions of who to help or not. It does not matter who it is it is the responsibility of police to do their job, they make assuntions very fast who to help and who not. It is a bad aproach. They will have you all day waiting while making jokes right in from of you. Next day when you want to know the advance of the case they cannot tell you because was different personnel working night shift I mean is ridiculous. The umprofessionalism and the conditions of the station says a lot. So sad that those from abroad did not made a difference neither.

The Police that work the desk ha an really bad attitude. When you go in there to report or even ask a simple question they make you wait some times up to a hour if your not careful. They sit in there an gossip amount them selves cause we don't have any choice but to wait until there finish talking. Some of the police are only in there for a pay check every 15 and 30 so they don't care.

Shame on you so call police here on Tortola. The woman came in to report her son missing and to inquire information and you all treated her that way? That was downright low. CPR/Courtsey,Professional and Respect is what a police department should stand for. Regardless of what, who and why, the woman lost her son. You unprofessional Tortola police department could have shown the woman some decency in the time of her grief.

They treat people that way because they don't have human relations skills or were taught how to deal with the public skills. They get away with it because they don't care or the don't have anyone in authority to set them stright. These days people only work for a check. The only way they would understand and care is if their shoe is on the other foot.

All the police had to do was pick up the phone and contact the police in St.Thomas if he had cared. I bet if this had happen in Tortola and the person was a citizen of St.Thomas, the police in St.Thomas would have been in contact with the police in Tortola. It is called communication. The police here is the worse. They sit around the station and gossip like they are at a sports bar or a backyard barbecue while you sit there waiting untill they feel like talking to you. That is one of the main reasons people don't report crimes it is not that people don't care.It is because the police have loose jaws. You report a crime, before you leave the station, your name is already spread around the Island. LOOSE JAWS.

This is an accurate comment. I reported a crime to a police station one night and was infomred by the police that they will pay the person a visit the following day. About 20 minutes later the said person contacted and visited me. An argument and altercation occurred and we all went back to the said police station. I asked the said police if they paid the person a visit when I left and he confirmed he didn't. That night I vowed to handle my own business. The police here are a waste of time.
      • good (22/02/2016, 14:21) Like (11) Dislike (0) Reply
You are so true about that. The police here have a problem with putting people business on the street and spreading your name when you go to them in confidence. It is much better if you handle your business on your own. Not cool but they the police drive you to do that because they love putting people that go to them for help name on the street before you walk out the station. That is putting people life's in danger. That is the number one reason people don't say anything when they see or know something.(Corruption, betrail, lies, harassment that is what the BVI police department stands for) to protect and serve is not in their vocabulary.

Why is the public alway quick to judge and jump on the Police?? Why?? There are two sides to a story, the young ladies shared theirs why can you wait to hear the reply of the Authorities. We have to understand the situation with the Family and in this case one second of waiting seems like an hour because of the thirst for information. Are we sure the police had the information at the time?? Sympathize with the family, however questions need to be asked? is it his first time? why wasn't he reported missing other times he would be gone for days and not seeing him. Only because of the talk on the road a missing person report was filled. Was he really missing?? Don't use the police as s scapegoat in this, they are not to be! And stop be prejudicial in you all comment because we here are island people too.

The police just can't up and do things just so... They have to have a Legit reason.. Did his pArtner in crime said it was him who went over board ... They had to wait until an official request was made from the USVI authorities. If his people them wanted it rush as a mother you could have get his records from the dental office your self . But you see people don't like to listen to reason.. And I'm not a cop
