ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The controversial National Health Insurance (NHI), which is being made mandatory for all working persons in the territory, is less than two weeks from literally getting off the ground and, according to Deputy Director of the Social Security Board Roy E. Barry, the preparatory process is going according to expectations.

Mr Barry told Virgin Islands News Online that the NHI team is currently testing the registration process to ensure it is working as expected and at the same time is in constant contact with employers ensuring that they are informed on what steps they need to follow to register as an employer and employee.

“First we used our internal employees and now we are using the information that we have from Social Security. We are using some of the employees names in the test,” said Mr Barry who also noted, “Well it’s working to our expectation.”

He said that at this stage employers need to follow the NHI website closely as it is being updated with the information as to the steps and instructions that they need to be aware of when it comes to registration. “So stay tuned to the website www.vinhi.vg,” he emphasised.

Flip Flopping over?

Since the Government of the VI announced plans to institute NHI there have been many changes in dates for its implementation and were accused of constantly ‘flip flopping’ as a result.

However, it was back in April that Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton said the National Health Insurance (NHI) was not going to come on stream until probably September 2015 and to date they are holding fast to this.

Speaking publicly on the issue on a radio talk show during mid-2014, Mr Barry had promised that the NHI would have been on stream from January 2015. Barry had said private insurers were set to be on board with NHI and would have been offering options to allow persons to continue their private insurance to supplement what the NHI is offering.

'NHI unaffordable'- critics

Critics of the NHI still believe the programme will cause people to give up one insurance over the other as retaining both will be hard on their pockets.

A woman, who had previously expressed her opinion on the scheme to this news site, said her concerns are valid because of the economic strain being felt by the majority.

The resident explained that since in the initial discussions of the NHI it was indicated that it would be compulsory for residents to sign up for NHI but that many persons would not be in a financial position to keep their current insurances.

Persons are still of the view that more consultations are needed with the public and the government of the day needs to come forward to tell the people exactly what is going on and where they are with NHI.

I pay the private insurance costs for all my employees. Under the new scheme, I will have to pay about the same but each of my employees will have to pay the same amount. Also, the cover under the new system is not as good, so my employees will need to buy supplementary insurance.
So it will cost more than twice as much, and the cover will not be so good.
        It beggars belief!!!!!

This is a willful act on the part of NDP and it shows that they don't give a d*mn about the people. The health minister does rush overseas when he sick why are we being forced to stay here and jump through all kind of hoops if we choose not to get treated here. I am going to say it again, NHI should be OPTIONAL!! You would be shocked to find out what percentage of the BVI is actually on board with this non-sense.

Earlier in the year the health minister had a lil gas pain and he jumped on the air ambulance and flew away.

So, I posted this yesterday, and they updated the cover page but failed to correct the other information. Nonetheless, this is what their website reflects: http://www.vinhi.vg/nhi-brochure/ ….not even the spelling of their name was correct. The “N” in NATIONAL on the cover page was missing (saw my post and updated it), yet the “A” in INSURANCE in the caption on pg. 3 is still missing. On pg. 6, paragraph 3, it states, “Therefore the maximum amount payable by employers and employers would be $251.87 each.” Really…employers and employers?

FULL SPEED AHEAD RUSHING TO POCKET OUR HARD-EARNED SALARIES. GET IT TOGETHER BEFORE DRAGGING US INTO THIS MESS OF AN INSURANCE SCHEME.

Very Observant. I also noted the "FOREWARD" by our Minister of Health on pg.2, as opposed to "FOREWORD". We should send them a direct email, I believe that would be more useful.

I can't agree more with you. I have private insurance which comes as part of my employment contract and it offers much more than the NHI is offering. Since they are claiming 65% of the population is without insurance then give it to them don't make it mandatory for everyone. When I finish paying my rent and bills 3.75% is barely all I have left of my salary to buy food when they take this from me what will I eat??? Also if I should get a child in the BVI since the NHI doesn't cover maternity benefits outside of the BVI will that child be given a Tortola/UK passport NOOO so then why force me to have my child here.... This whole NHI is a bunch of crap!!!

    http://obamacarefacts.com/obamacare-mandate-exemption-penalty/

For those mentioning Obamacare: “Americans who can afford to purchase insurance and choose not to do so will have to pay an income tax “penalty”. This is officially a tax, but is also referred to as a “fee”, “penalty”, or “mandate”. The way the ObamaCare mandate works is that any non-exempt American without minimum essential coverage will owe a per-month fee. The fee is $325 per adult and $162.50 per child (up to $975 for a family) or 2% of your taxable income a year. The monthly fee is 1/12 of the total annual fee (example: $325/12= $27.08 per month). The total penalty amount cannot exceed the national average of the annual premiums of a “bronze level” health insurance plan on ObamaCare exchanges.”

What are the consequences of not taking the insurance? I trust in the Almighty over 5 yrs for my family and I to do without insurance. That's faith because if its your turn MANKIND INSURANCE can't help you. Who He blesses mankind fighting to curse and kill. All subliminal messages to force a country into what? Yet still can't provide Doctors or believe in their own Doctors in medical institution that too hurt all pockets. Empty vessel when the own Government can't see their own way and providing sound and basic quality structure for its people is a mere struggle. Rastafari bless this Territory, burn every evil and wickedness upon this place that trying to corrupt our very children down to the heavy dosage of antibiotics that breed in infants and it can go on.....Prayers in these times.
