BREWERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The refurbished community centre in Brewers Bay will be officially handed over to the community this Friday, September 19, 2025.

Minister for Health and Social Services, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), revealed this while replying to a question about the centre from District 2 Representative, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull, during the Eighth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

The George W. Christopher Community Centre reopens after 8 years

This community centre will be the seventh to be restored since the 2017 hurricanes and will provide a safe, welcoming space for community gatherings and activities in Brewers Bay.

“I am pleased to inform this Honourable House that refurbishment works on the centre have now been substantially completed. The ministry, working closely with the Department of Social Development, is finalising preparations for the official handover and opening of that facility," Hon Wheatley stated.

According to the minister, invitations for Friday’s event have already been sent.

The centre is named the George W. Christopher Community Centre “in recognition of the late Mr Christopher’s contribution to that wonderful community of Brewers Bay”, he added.

Community center to be immediately furnished

Unlike community centers that have been handed over and furnished long afterwards, Hon Wheatley said his ministry took proactive steps in 2023 and 2024 to procure furniture for use across community centers throughout the Territory.

“As a result, we are confident that the centre will be furnished immediately following the handover ceremony. This will allow the facility to be placed into service without undue delay.”

The Minister thanked the public, especially the people of the Second District, for their patience.

“Their support and endurance have been critical in getting us to this milestone. This marks a significant moment for that community, bringing the center back into service after being out of use since 2017 and ensuring that the people of Brewers Bay once again have access to a properly refurbished facility.”

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.
