Reflect on ‘history, victories & spirit of unity’ in celebrating VI Day 2024– Premier
This spirit, he said, has brought the territory to where it is today and that the day holds great significance in the quest for autonomy and self-governance, as the VI became a standalone colony, on July 1, 1956, following the dissolution of the colony of the Leeward Islands.
“The practical outcome of this was a direct and singular relationship with the United Kingdom, providing the opportunity to negotiate and advocate in the best interest of a historically neglected Virgin Islands. Colony Day was the first name of the holiday and it was later changed to Territory Day before being recently changed to Virgin Islands Day, representing our collective desire for greater autonomy and self-governance, while celebrating our Virgin Islands culture and identity,” he said.
On another note, the premier said the celebration also comes against the backdrop of efforts to implement the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry. He said to be successful in building a sustainable nation, the VI must embrace the reality that improving its governance is a key element in building confidence in our ability to manage its own affairs.
Stay committed to progress - Premier
The Premier said as the VI makes significant progress in strengthening its institutions and improving its democratic systems, it must stay committed to collective progress towards a post-colonial status, especially with the negotiation of a new constitution.
“Let us reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of our elders and fore-parents, who worked hard and fought for our political, economic and social advancement. Let this generation grab the baton and continue our collective efforts to shape a better future,” he added.
The Premier also applauded the Virgin Islands Icon Awards for its “progressive step” in recognising and honouring Virgin Islanders for their awesome contributions towards the building of a sustainable nation.
He reiterated calls for the VI to reflect on its historic journey from slave colony to the present status and on to the ultimate objective of decolonisation.
